How would you even know if you had benefitted from positive discrimination. Did you have access to all the information about the other candidates who applied for the jobs you applied for? Did you ask whenever you were offered a job if they had given you 'extra points' because you were female? How many jobs did you turn down because you had been?

That's even supposing women are a minority in the US, I wasn't aware that they were  . However, yes, in some areas of business there is discrimination against women, even today.

I was speaking hypothetically. And in the work force, I think women are still a minority. I think you're being intentionally obtuse if you're even going to debate that.

What you are asking me to believe is that had you, a white guy, been brought up in the exact same circumstances as your black counterparts who become gang members, something about being 'white' would prevent you from 'choosing' gang culture. Do you know how absurd and yes racial that is?

nobody forced anyone to become gang bangers in the first place, right?

So at the football game today someone asks me where my accent is from, I said South Africa, the person goes: "Oh, so you're African-American now?"

That was hilarious, got me thinking, hell yes! I guess I am, I was actually born in Africa so I definetely have the right to call myself African-American, more so than anyone not born there who call themselves AA.

hey Great! Run for President. Dems will vote for YOU before they would vote for a WHITE WOMAN! Dems basically hate women unless they are African American, then they choose fat ones (paid by the pound, I suppose) to tell us not to smoke. Yeeee haaaaaaaaa!

Shani - have you never heard of Peer Pressure?

Leaving that aside, clearly if you don't have the aspirations, imagination or ambition to aspire to something then you are likely to become a product of your background.

Awwwww so you are a follower! I knew it! You lil pull toy you.

Peer pressure my foot! There were kids who smoked and drank in my HS - they thought they were cool, at the time I thought they were idiots, lots of peer pressure around me all the time, it doesn't affect me much... I know what's right and wrong. I'm sure all the nerds out there can say the same about 'peer pressure'.

 I truly hope that will never be my fate!

Hey, but if it is, it won't be YOUR fault! You are African American, who could possibly expect you to do well on your own? Who could even imagine you would be independent, educated, successful? NO!!!! You MUST need the help of the government because you CAN'T do it on your own.

Hold your head up high and proudly say "YES....I CAN'T!!!!" The Democrats will start writing checks to yu, tell you where to live, what to eat, where your kids go to school, pay for your medicine. Easy street girl! Because you CAN'T.

I think we're all losing sight of something: not all black people live in the fking ghetto. Speaking from personal experience, I grew up in an upper middle class area, went to private school, etc. I had black classmates and friends. Many of whom I still speak to this day, actually...and they all have made very nice lives for themselves. Along with all my white/asian/other friends too. We were, and still are ALL on a level playing field.

I'm not saying there's not a problem with the economically disadvantaged. But I think economics goes across race...yes, I believe in merit based scholarships for the needy. I don't think there should be a race qualification to them though. But all these assertations that black=ghetto is wrong. There are 'gang bangers' of every race.

Does racism exist? OF COURSE IT DOES. Is AA gonna change that? No. It only perpetuates the 'black=lazy' stereotype.

You can live in the ghetto (being any race at all), drop out of school, get your GED, go to community college while working a full time job, then complete your degree at a 4 year university. Anyone can do that.

In 2010, with a black POTUS, with successful black people in EVERY profession, walk of life, etc.... there is no need to keep harping on the 'historically this that and the other'.

i said no such thing. now quit trying to be so provocative and stay in context. in case you didn't get it the first time, i'm merely pointing out that i'm not buying the "oh i'm stuck in this situation" ####### that so many tout. what prevents a teenager (17-19) from joining the military and bettering themselves is baffling. it's not a real difficult recipe to follow: stay in school, join the military for 3 years or more, and you get your college paid for. and yeah, that's exactly what i did. and i wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth either.

and btw, my last assignment i had a co-worker from the "hood" who did exactly that too and last i knew of, he was working on his master's. and he isn't the only example i can cite either. ;)

Peer pressure is a lame excuse for failure. It has no effect on thinking people.

What aspirations, imagination or ambition is inspired by WELFARE? It is specifically designed to prevent those exact qwualities and keep a race of people exactly where they have been, by one means or another, for more than 300 years. The KKK couldn't have done it better...and then if someone disagrees they say HE is the racist. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Peer pressure didn't affect me either, but then again I went to a fairly good school and I had a stable two-parent middle-class family.
