I was reading on another forum (not actually immigration related) and there happened to be a thread going on about the immigration process. Most of those who had been through the process (and many of those who thought they knew something) were of the belief that you "need" a lawyer to get through it all.

I don't agree with that personally. We didn't use a lawyer and we did just fine. Of course we read through many immigration boards and have good reading comprehension as far as all of the forms go.

I guess if you have the money to do it, and you want to have a lawyer, you should have one. Any complicated case should have one. But for "routine" cases, I think it's incorrect to assume that you "need" a lawyer to get through it.

Opinions?

For those who don't have "complicated cases" but still hire a lawyer, perhaps they are too busy that they want someone to prepare and review the forms and documents then make a follow up on the progress of their petition. Another reason is that maybe they feel most confident with a lawyer. When Joe (Joseph&Ana) successfully brought his fiancee here in the U.S., he was still convinced that he had made the right decision of getting a lawyer. Before he started the petition last year, he asked the VJ people whether or not the K1 process needs a lawyer. Most answers discouraged him from paying a lawyer. Yet, he still pursued his plans and ended without regrets in spite the fact that he spent a lot of time being in VJ as an active poster.

It's a personal preference. "To itch his own." :P
