Hi Guys,

Sean is POE'ing next Monday, February 1st with his dad at either the Peace or the Lewiston Bridge. I won't be there, so I just want to make sure I know what to tell him.

He needs the following:

-Do Not Open package

-Passport with K1 Visa

-Don't leave without the I-194!

-Does he need an inventory list? I have seen people mention bringing a list, but it doesn't seem like it is required.

They are renting a truck/van/uhaul and driving down to Florida. He doesn't really have much stuff, and he refuses to bring his car because he thinks it is near death lol.

A few more questions:

1. Can he get his social securty card with his I-194 even though it will say that it is not valid for employment? I'd like to get him his SS # to have it ready for AOS.

2. Does anyone know of a car rental company that will let you pick up in Canada and drop off in the states? His dad would like to fly out of here rather than have to drive back.

I am so excited that Sean will be here in a week forever! Yay!

I went through Ambassador Bridge, and I'd recommend an inventory list. They seemed both impressed and relieved that I had one with me.

Also: 6USD is required for the I-94.

Yes, he can get his SSN with his I-94. I did without issue, from the Orlando office. He'll require his passport, visa, I-94, birth certificate (long form if you have, but I didn't, so the woman forgave me) and the application form. It must be done before the last two weeks of his I-94 expiring, but no sooner than ten days after entering the country, as you must give it a chance for his name to be put through the system. I did it on day ten exactly, the day before we married.

Sorry, I don't know about the car rental.

Either way, good luck to him! :)

That's good information about the SS card. I have the application filled out and ready to go for when he gets here. I didn't know about the 10 day waiting period so thanks for that piece of info! I'll recommend he make an inventory list based on your experience at the Ambassador Bridge.

I did a search for car rentals going from Canada and dropping off in the US, and so far I have come up with nothing. I looked at Budget and Aavis and neither will allow you to do this.

You can try to apply right away, but the problem is if they can't find him in the system, they have to send off some document to head office to try to find him... which can cause incredible delays. If you wait the little while, they should have no problem finding him, and then he'll receive his card about a week after that.

Sorry you're not having luck with the car rental thing. If they're renting the Uhaul, can't he simply leave the Uhaul up there and leave it down here? Then his dad can fly back home? Or is there a reason why they need a separate car to drive down?

I think they are renting a van not necessarily a Uhaul. He really only has his clothes, books, etc and the only "big" things are his computer chair and computer.

They are renting a car with the hopes that no one needs to make a return drive to Canada. He is not bringing his car.

I have no problem waiting the 10 days for the social. The office here has the worst hours so I will have to miss work to take him over there anyway (grumble grumble).

You can rent U-Haul vans.

It is recommended he bring an inventory list. They may not ask for it, but if they do and he doesn't have it, he might get in trouble.

I POE'd at the Peace Bridge and it was a breeze. Got there at a low traffic time and I was done in 45 minutes.

I just looked at Uhauls and the smallest truck they had costs $1798 to rent! Ouch! I looked all over the site for renting vans but couldn't find anything about vans. =/

Yes we have both. They are actually the same company now. I went to Budget's site first but they don't do Canada to USA one way (at least not for vans).

There's something on the Hertz web site that says you can drop off the vehicle at different location...not sure if this includes Canada/US travels...but its worth a try to inquire with them.

Piece of personal POE advice: Don't let them(CBP) tell your fiance his visa expired(based on the NOA2 date) :P

Good Luck to him!!

You have to apply for the SSN before 30 days of the expiration date on the I-94. We were there on the 30th day and got denied and had to wait until we had completed the AoS.

Haven't heard of the 30 day thing... If I was mistaken, I'm sorry.

Arabella, they budget a certain amount of time on Uhaul's website as well. I believe for FL they allot 6 days, and I doubt you'll need it that long. You'd probably get further at narrowing down a price by calling them.
