Neither the NOA1 nor the NOA2 will be necessary during the interview. Still, next time, whatever immigration papers you receive, just make sure to produce copies of them. You'll never know when the need arises.

The rule of thumb is to have a copy of the NOA2 at the interview, but its rare that you'd be asked to produce it. Still, what's one more piece of paper when you're already bringing reams?

the NOA2 is the petition approval notice ... only approved petitions are forwarded to consulates... so by the shear fact that the petition is on station indicates to the CO that the petition has been approved... not sure what additional evidence the NOA2 will provide and why it is even considered a "rule of thumb". Just me opinion.

YMMV

The only thing I can guess is they have to have a copy of it for whatever reason - and we know how USCIS/DOS can be about losing things sometimes!

I guess I don't see taking one more piece of paper as a hardship. Plus you need one for AOS anyway so keep the copy and mail it in with the I 485.
