Where to start on this one? Is it the smugness that bothers you? Or the other labels? Would smug replies from moderate or conservative atheists be better? What about agnostics? Would a smug liberal Muslim be ok? What about a smarmy moderate Taoist?

Wherever you want. Yes. No. No. No. No. No.

Oh, I see. Well, now you've left me in a position where I must.......agree......with.......you. I'm not a fan of the smug answers myself. (and I'll barely even mention how you didn't actually need to use the labels "liberal" and "atheist" to make the point about smugness...but that might make me seem a bit smug :P )

I believe it's a sign of the apocalypse when my husband and Marissa agree from within a thread about religion.

I have a BFA in Character Animation...

Is that a Bachelor of Fscking Arts? hahahaha I kill me

The amount of self-righteous posts is starting to make me gag.

Pot? Kettle on the line....

Sorry, couldn't resist. I do prefer the "new, improved" incanada over the old one. Still a ways to go, though IMHO.

I wish someone would do a study on that. Because the results may be different than expected. Most people know I love C.S. Lewis' works. He was extremely intelligent, a professor at Oxford and Cambridge, well known and respected, and very strong in his faith in God. He was an atheist for many years of his young adult life. But after trying to prove Christianity was dumb and also trying to prove that believing in God was ignorant...he ended up believing it himself with no pressure from anyone else. But instead he himself figured it out. There are many others like him.

Convenient he happened to "figure out" what you believe. Would you still respect him if he had "figured out" Buddhism was the right path for himself? Or Islam? Or Hinduism?

Believe what you want, but don't think less of someone cause they believe something different. Think about this: maybe God wants that person to believe in something different.

I don't think less of people who believe different things, I just don't agree with them. And I wouldn't like C.S. Lewis' theological works as much if he had nothing to do with Christianity, which is my interest.

Ok, I'm not sure if I'm misundertanding your tone or if you're deliberately using language to be inflammatory, so I'll take these on for the time being.

I have a BA in Sociology, I skipped 7th grade in middle school because of my ability to learn very fast, so what? Do I get to be called educated now? I intend to get my masters one day. There are many well educated Christians. Education doesn't mean to pretend there is no God.

The word I'm having issues with is "pretend". You're entitled to your beliefs, as are all beings. However when in the defense of your beliefs you discount anything contradictory as being "pretend" you're being quite closed minded. My beliefs are just as valid as yours, and if my belief that 'god' doesn't exist is pretend, so therefore must your belief that 'god' exists also be pretend. It seems very arrogant and dismissive of you to do such an act, especially when you've been so very sensible during the rest of this discussion, so I'm inclined to think I may be misunderstanding or applying too much tone to the word, but that is how I read it.

I didn't mean for that to sound rude, I am sorry. I was just trying to say that if I believe in God, and then become educated, doesn't mean I personally would pretend to not believe in God just because I was educated.

Whether or not people listen should not be our motivation for sharing the good news or for working in the field, feeding the poor and clothing the naked. Jesus commanded us to do these things. He didn't tell us to do it only if people respond. We're commanded to share the gospel; we're commanded to pray; and we're commanded to share with the poor. Jesus said for us to do it, and there's no excuse for us not to. I'm looking forward to Jesus coming back for us as much as anyone. But when He comes, I want Him to find me working hard for Him - not just watching the clouds.

Now I don't look down on anyone who also does not believe in what I do but just because I don't look down on them or see them as an equal human being as me doesn't mean I have to agree with what they believe in. I'm just here to live out my life for God. Whoever chooses not to believe, well that again is THEIR choice. Nothing we as christians can change about that. All I can do is let God take matters into his own hands. Sometimes there is only so much people can do , so lets just do that, do what we can do and leave the rest up to God

Not so much now, actually. We've changed. I wouldn't mind staying here permanently, it's just that we want to at least try living in the U.S.

I don't know how you missed it...big board and he doesn't post as often as I do, maybe?

I suppose. And now I'm wondering who else is a vj member married or engaged to another vj member...

Ah, ok gotcha. I was figuring it was something like that, as that would be pretty far out of character for you.

I know what you mean, I went to a liberal arts college on the west coast.....and even there it's not "here's your diploma, now pretend god doesn't exist". I personally see the path of education being a parallel to many people's quest for religion/spirituality: it's a path to enlightenment, but not a finite journey, and it should take a lifetime to accomplish.

I think this goes back to a question 65 pages ago... why can't someone who doesn't believe do just as many good things without being told to by a scripture? Aren't those good works just as valid?
