You should be able to file yourself with the short form; you definitely won't pay any tax (could get a refund?) but it's good to have it for a record of your income.

There are lots of free tax preparation services out there and the IRS will also answer your questions for free if you call or visit their offices.

If you got paid through an employer that paid taxes on you, you definately need to file. And, yes, you could get a refund of even more taxes then you paid.

If you got paid by an employer that would issue you a 1099, you did not cross that $600 threshhold and will not even get a 1099 issued. However, there may be a chance you used your own car/tools/whatever and can deduct them as business expenses, maybe take a loss, and get a refund.

I'd ask a qualified tax preparer about your individual situation and see what they can do for you. It might pay off for you.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

The beauty of the American system is that if you do not pay, there may be an obscure regulation

that they hit you with years later with a penalty, but if you do, file, you get a refund.

The income you made, even if you get money back on it, is added to the gross national product and

the government starts writing checks wilily-nilly for various entitlement and benefit programs on

the basis of that money, even if it doesn't really exist.

If you are a low or moderate income earner with a simple tax situation, you can get free help from IRS volunteers to prepare your taxes. Don't pay H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt to do it.

Filing your taxes can even make you money. For low income earners with dependents, the earned income credit can be a blessing in this time of economic distress.
