Frankfurt Embassy and Vaccination History

David does not have any paperwork to prove that he has received any vaccinations whatsoever. He's going to phone the civil surgeon in Frankfurt this week to talk to them about requirements, but has anyone else encountered a similar situation?

If he needs to repeat any, we'd prefer that have done only what's necessary to gain him admittance and then catch the rest up when he's covered under my medical insurance.

Thoughts anyone? This is the only potential 'hold up' that I am concerned about right now....

At the medical exam, they will ask him what vaccinations he has had. From his history, his age, and his nationality, they'll determine what vaccinations, if any, he still needs.

My husband had his vaccination booklet with him. He had had mostly all of them, except the MMR vaccine. The panel physician he went to in Berlin told him to go to a children's doctor to get the MMR vaccination. That was covered by his private insurance... My husband faxed the vaccination "receipt" for the MMR to the panel physician in Berlin. The doctor who administered the vaccine provided her signature on this "receipt."

The medical was fine.

Simply ask the doctor if your fiance can get any required vaccinations at another doctor's office to reduce costs. Then make sure your husband faxes the vaccination forms--ones that say he did indeed get the vaccination--back to the panel physician. Also, make sure that the doctor who administered the vaccine provides his/her signature.

Because you're doing a K-1, I do believe it's possible to get certain vaccines after entering the United States. Do a search on these forums for that.

However, this would be costly in the US compared to England I imagine.

I would suggest the same as zauberblume, and get his own GP to administer the required vaccines. I had no records either and only had to get the MMR and a tetanus shot, which were included in the price of my medical. These should be 'topped" up every certain amount of years anyways, so I didn't mind having to get them. I had to get the varicella (chicken pox vaccine) in the US as it is not available in Ireland and I'd never had the chicken pox.

I think it would be better, in the long run, for your fiance to have all of his vaccines done in Germany. As far as I know, all of the vaccines are available in Germany. He should be able to get them done by your general practitioner. Fax the proof of vaccines to the panel physician. If your fiance is currently resident in Germany with health insurance, then he shouldn't have to pay to have those vaccines, depending on if he has public or private insurance.

Either way, I don't believe it is too costly to get the vaccines. What is costly, in my opinion, is the entire medical exam! Oh, and, in our case, the application for an immigrant visa. Wow!

There are no civil surgeons outside the USA, only panel physicians, but that's beside the point.

The K visas, being non-immigrant visas, don't require vaccinations. (That's why the I-693 Vaccination Supplement is routinely asked for of applicants for adjustment from K status.) Unless a particular post decides to insist on them. In any case, the panel physician will indicate on the vaccination form which vaccinations are medically inappropriate and why (age is a common reason for some), and recommend a waiver those. Then you only have to worry about the others.

In my case they wanted to give me boosters of the ones I had as a child (I´m 35), except for the Influenza B. Here in Iceland they won´t give that to adults, say it´s useless. I´ll have my medical in three weeks so I´ll see what that doctor says. It looks like I´ll be having the last Hep B shot in the States since I can´t get that one until the 12th of November. Well

Hey, Im German and I had my medical last week. Your fiance does need the required vaccinations. I can write you the list later on - if you want me to - I dont have it with me right now...

Either way, he can just go to his regular doctor and get the shots before he goes to the medical. The German health insurance does usually cover it completly. His doctor has to give him a vaccination pass which will be excepted by the panel physician. If some shots are still missing he can get them right at the medical as well - but it will be quite expensive...

The K visas, being non-immigrant visas, don't require vaccinations.

He will need them for AOS though, so it might be good to get them out of the way. My fiancé opted to get his taken care of now.

Just wanted to add my husband's experience....he had no record of vaccinations when he went to his medical examination for the K-1 visa. The panel physician constructed a record of vaccinations for him based on standard practice in their country backed by scars showing where he had had certain vaccinations. He also wrote a letter explaining everything. This was good enough to get the visa, but when we applied for AOS, my husband had to get the three vaccinations that aren't available in his country. We had them done by the civil surgeon who filled out the I-693A Vaccination Supplement

David called tha panel physician in Frankfurt who told him to see his personal physician for an Imfpass, which he did today. The Imfpass, however, only lists his Tetanus... and the slip has his old address listed, so he's going to have to go back....

David's going to phone the doc in Frankfurt again, because that doesn't seem right.....

The panel phys also said that the medical can be done at any time.... but doesn't he need to take some paperwork from packet 3 to his medical???

My husband scheduled his medical before we had received Packet 3. Because there were no available appointments until two or three weeks later, we ended up receiving Packet 3 before the actual medical exam.

Let me repost the response I was given via email from a Frankfurt Consulate staff member.

Response from Frankfurt about medical examination:

Thank your e-mail. As the medical examination is only valid from 6-12 months we suggest that you schedule the medical appointment after filing the petition if you are certain that you expect to soon immigrate. Most panel physicians require a case number. So if you appear at the USCIS office in Frankfurt to file the petition, then request a case number from our Window 23.

The vaccinations:

My husband is 26 years old. He was born and grew up in Germany.

According to the panel physician, my husband needed to have had the following vaccinations: DT/DTP/DTaP, Td, Measles, Mumps (for MMR), Rubella (or MR or MMR), and Varicella.

The only vaccination my husband needed was the MMR. He had already had Varicella so the panel physician wrote, "VH," which means, "varicella history" on the Vaccination Documentation Worksheet.

I don't understand what is going on your fiance's case with the vaccinations. Could you explain a bit more? He only has a record of one vaccine, the tetanus, ever? If he was born in Germany, it's likely that he had the other vaccines. The panel physician should be able to tell him what is appropriate for his age.

My only advice is to schedule the medical exam. Then, once the panel physician determines what vaccinations are necessary for your fiance, have your fiance ask the panel physician if he can get the vaccinations at his primary physician to reduce costs. Have your fiance tell the panel physician that he will then fax him the proof that he had the vaccines.

Varicella is required too. But in Germany people at my age (Im 24) didnt get these shots. We usually all get varicella (german:Windpocken) when we are little kids and then you are protected. I had it as I was 3 years old and my doctor wrote me paper which the panel physician excepted. The panel physician in Frankfurt definately excepts vaccinations given by other physicians. Your fiance just has to go to his normal doctor with his "Impfpass", get the shots, the doctor will write them in his Impfpass and done!

Really? Where did you hear this? My husband is German and is 26 years old. He's from a small town near Freiburg. He had all of those vaccines that I listed above as a child except the MMR. He also had a tetanus shot when he was a teenager.

Well, I didnt hear that somewhere. It is just the way it is. Its really an exception that your husband got varicella shots. I dont know ANYBODY (except of 2 babys) who got varicella shots. They have just started to do it about 2 years ago, and still alot of people dont wanna do so cause it is not so bad and the shots might cause more problems than the real desease. Most kids get it in kindergarden. I got it with 3 years, and pretty much all the other kids in the kindergarden, too. If you had it once you cant get it again and you are protected. I have heard that some people who didnt get it as a kid, do so when there are adults, cause the desease breaks out much worse for adults and it is dangerous in pregnancy. What can I say, thats all I know..
