Marketwatch.com may be telling me otherwise, but hotjobs.com tells me the labor market for Technology is making a comeback

Technology jobs in the Jersey City metro area (posted in last 60 days) early this year yielded total hits in the 500s.

Today? 1,326.

Nice!

They could have simply bought out a local job search site.

Last year when I was looking to change jobs I considered joining theladders but didn't because I didn't see a free option and refused to pay to join a listing site.

I got a lot of mileage out of dice.com - for tech jobs I think it's the best online source. Even then, I think the online listings are mostly put out by recruiting firms and not by actual employers. They typically dangle some positions out on the sites but keep other better quality ones internally. Use an online site like dice.com or careerbuilder.com to build relationships with the recruiters who specialize in your field, and then work directly with the recruiters. That led me to meaningful interviews and to a good position.

i've had good luck with hotjobs in the past.

most of my experience with recruiters hasn't been all that great.

Most are dickwads.

Some work hard and add value.

The one that lined me up for my current position was great. He gave me lots of inside scoop on the companies I would be interviewing at, salary research, etc. He's very plugged into the local trading firms and works hard to maintain his relationships.

Headhunters get a bum rap. Some of them work really hard. Besides, since it's the employer that pays their fee and not you (the recruit), what's the harm in using them - especially in tough labor markets?

I never said I wouldn't use them. Just that I'm leery of them and tend to avoid them when possible.

That said, if I get laid off tomorrow a headhunter who hooked a friend up recently is likely one of the first five calls I'd make.
