Wen: China's emissions cut promise serious

China's promise on its carbon dioxide emissions cut target was "a serious and solemn one," said Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing Friday.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (2nd, R) meets with representatives from India, South Africa, Brazil and the G77 group of developing nations, who are here for consultations with China on climate change issues, in Beijing, China, Nov. 27, 2009.

Wen made the remarks in a meeting with representatives from India, South Africa, Brazil and the G77 group of developing nations, who were here for consultations with China on climate change issues.

The State Council, or the Chinese cabinet, announced Thursday that China was going to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005.

Wen told the foreign representatives that the Chinese government set down the task plan "based on our own national conditions and long-term interests," and "in the spirit of being responsible for the welfare of all the people in the world."

China's target was made after full scientific research and conformed to reality, the premier noted.

"We need to devote great efforts to reach the target," he said.

Wen called for global cooperation in addressing climate change issues, saying that the developing nations enjoyed common interests in this sector.

China valued the mechanism of consultation with India, Brazil and South Africa, and would increase coordination with the G77 group, he said.

"We will work with all parties concerned to help bring about reasonable and realizable outcome of the upcoming UN climate change conference in Copenhagen," said Wen, who is scheduled to attend the conference next month.

The foreign representatives applauded China's efforts and achievements in tackling climate change issues.

They agreed that developing nations should work together to safeguard common interests and make contribution to coping with this challenge and achieve sustainable development.

Indian Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh, Brazilian Presidential Advisor Marcel Fortuna Biato, and South African Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Buyelwa Sonjica were here for the ministerial consultations on climate change on Nov. 28.

The Chinese representative to the consultations will be Xie Zhenhua, vice minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission.

Sudan's Lumumba Stanislaus Di-Aping, a representative of the G77, had concluded his consultations with Xie earlier Friday.

Do you agree with this stance by China?

ya know, being responsible?

for people?

unlike America conservatives?

I think that it would be great for all governments to be responsible in terms of pollution, energy consumption, and the welfare of their people. However, how can China do that and maintain its' current growth? Unless some alien technology was uncovered to replace fossil fuels, I think we will see much of the same and many more Chinese dying in mines. My fiancee is Chinese, I think the culture is incredible, but I also see a lot of problems with the thinking of those in power that will create roadblocks. Maybe they are starting to come to the realization that they are in the position to surpass the US economically (thankfully not militarily..yet) and need some types of reform. That is my opinion...now we just have to wait for the "teabaggers" to chime in ;)

i agree that china is saving face.

i agree that china is number 1 (in terms of pollution).

i agree that china's pollution will continue to increase as china increasingly uses fossil fuels to generate energy.

i agree that china will continue to talk the talk, but refuse to walk the walk.

i agree that truth is truth, however ugly it may be.

i have personal knowlege of the power generation industry and the heavy manufacturing capabilities of china.

i have lived there, and seen it up close.

i know you don't like the truth, but that doesn't change it's nature.

i agree that your repetitive provoking of such issues is tiresome.

I know you don't like the truth, but that doesn't change it's nature and you take every chance to belittle China. Just like all your fellow teabaggers, birthers, tenthers, deniers, secessionists, etc.

Other tidbits for you to deny:

The view of the largest solar energy office building in the world in Dezhou, Shangdong Province in northwest China.

The world's largest solar energy office building opened on November 27 in Dezhou, Shangdong Province in northwest China. The building, which has a total area of 75,000 square meters, features exhibition centers, scientific research facilities, meeting and training facilities, and a hotel.

The design of the building is based on the sun dial and underlines the urgency of seeking renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels. The design also features the Chinese characters for sun "日" and moon "月", and the color white predominates, symbolizing clean energy.

Green ideas have been applied throughout the construction. The external structure of the building used only one percent of the steel used to construct the Bird's Nest. Advanced roof and wall insulation mean energy savings 30 percent higher than the national energy saving standard.

The building will be the main venue for the 4th World Solar City Congress. The building's ground-breaking solar energy and power-saving technologies, some of which have already been patented, include a number of technical advances that will push forward the mass application of solar energy.

a drop in an enormous bucket.

these projects remind me of the public works projects built in the new luoyang "province center", in which millions of dollars have been spent upon the appearance of prosperity, within miles of poverty. perhaps china should be feeding it's poor, before appearing to be rich.

'China' will 'seem' more serious when the CCP covers this topic, makes guidelines, at the annual meeting, then publishes 'CCP-approved' information on upcoming projects.

Until that happens, I sense all meetings are lip service.

Ya can't deny the actual buildings and factories, of course - so that is good thing...

How many more published guidelines and upcoming projects do you think it will take?

When the source is the CCP Central Planning Committee, then it's official. Sorry.

It's not about 'a number' - so 'how many more' - to me, is useless to think.

The SOURCE is what matters... Not knocking ya, truly, but suggest you pay particular attention to 'the source' .

perhaps china should be feeding it's poor, before BANKROLLING THE USA.

Fixed it for you. :bonk: Sit back and despise the Chinese all you want, they are your boss and don't think you are not expendable.

i am sensing some hostility from you, little yellow friend.

perhaps projecting your rage at your own perceived enslavement is cathartic, but we are not amused.

i don't despise chinese, but i do laugh at you.
