Sign or not to sign DS forms - Packet 3

Hi everyone!

My fiance finally got packet 3! I have been reading load of conflicting information about which of the DS forms he should sign and not sign. On the US embassy London website, it says nothing about "not" signing these forms, so one would assume to sign them, then on visa journey is says to leave DS 156 and DS 156k unsigned for the London embassy.

So I just call the Department of State and they say my fiance has to sign the DS-156 and DS 156K and not sign the DS-230 and send it back to the embassy. The thing is he has already sent back Packet 3.

Has anyone had trouble or delays with unsigned vs signed DS forms?

Thanks! Emily

As I understand it, you need to sign DS-230 Part 1 only NOT part 2.

I was in the same confused state - so decided to follow the advice on the London embassy site which says NOT to sign DS-156 nor DS-156K. I signed DS-230 Part 1 as it doesn't say anywhere NOT to sign it. Sent the papers back last week so fingers crossed I got it right. I'm surprised DOS told you to sign 156 and 156K though.

DOS answers for every embassy around the world not just London. Go by the directions on the London Embassy website. My fiance only signed DS-230 part 1. Part 2 of that form is to be brought to the interview. The rest of the DS forms he did not sign...

Hi,

I found myself in the same situation in wondering what to sign. I signed the DS-230 Part 1 and DS-156, I did not sign DS-230 Part 2 or DS-156K (it says not to on the form for both these forms). When I went for the interview, I was handed my DS-156K and asked to write Jen's name in the space and to sign the form.

I guess it would be better to have not signed something rather than to have done so against what the form has said. I found the staff at the Embassy in London helpful and I'm sure they will make sure that there are signatures in the right places when needs be.

So you take the DS-230 Part 2 with you filled out to the interview but not signed?

YES ** DS-230 - Sign page 2. Throw away p.3-4 if you are a K1. Those pages are for totally different visa applicant.

YES ** DS-156 - Electronic online form. Print and sign.

NO ** DS-157 - No signature line on this form, so you can't sign it.

NO ** DS-156 - This form has an oath if you read it. You will hold up you hand in front of the officer and swear the truth in front of him and he witnesses you signature.

The whole thing about signing or not signing is the form with the oath. They want you to sign after they have sworn you in and witness your signature.

on the appointment letter for a K-1 it states to bring the DS-230 part 2 with you to the interview. Someone who just had an interview for the K-1 was asked for part 2 when she got to the interview...

I sent Part 2 back to the Embassy unsigned with the original application. I had read that it wasn't needed, as Nich-Nick also states, but as gmjdmj also says there's always the off chance that for some unknown reason these things are requested. I didn't see Part 2 at the interview, but it doesn't hurt to have it to hand just in case.

Yep, UNSIGNED.

We accidentally signed everything as we got used to doing so with all of those different forms and then quickly realised and had to start the form over. I signed it at the interview.

We sent both parts of the DS230 to the embassy and had no problems at all. If you don't send part 2, you just get a note telling you to bring it with you.
