hmmm, I'm not sure you got the right one...

Here's what you need:

"Police Records

Inside Canada: Applicants who are physically present in Canada should contact their local police service or Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) office regarding criminal record check procedures. Applicants may obtain a certificate of no conviction issued by any Canadian police service so long as it notes that Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using the applicant’s name and date of birth. Applicants should ensure that the search includes all names that they have previously used, including maiden names, prior married names, or names used before Canadian naturalization. (Note: Because records checks based on name and date of birth only are sometimes less thorough than those based on fingerprints, U.S. diplomatic offices reserve the right to request that certain applicants obtain fingerprint-based searches from the RCMP.)" Source: http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/reciproc...ocity_3531.html

and the info from the SQ to get it in Quebec:

Coût/Mode de paiement: Des frais sont exigés dans les services de police municipaux.

Ce service est gratuit à la Sûreté du Québec, mais il est offert seulement si aucun service de police municipal n'est présent dans le territoire desservi. (http://www.formulaire.gouv.qc.ca/cgi/affiche_doc.cgi?dossier=5006&table=0#21 )

*** I don't now where you are located, but I did call the SQ stations around Montreal, and none of them where providing this service (since municipal police services were available...) so, I went to my Poste de quartier (SPM) and they refered me to Complexe Guy-Favreau where "Service d'empreintes digitales du Canada" (lower level, 514-285-2246) is located. $40 and one week later I received my (bilingual) certificate at home issued by the Chief of Police of Charlettetown, PEI.

I've also heard about "Les commissionnaires" or something like that, but I have no information about them.

____

Here's what's on mine:

Canadian Police Certificate

For employment, Visa applicants, Foreign Travel/Work Permits

NAME : My full name with all my middle names - Gender - DOB

Addresss: my address

This certifies that a search based on the above name and DOB failed to disclose any such person with a record of criminal conviction in the national repository for criminal records in Canada. Note: Search not confirmed by fingerprints.

Issued by.

Chief of police, Charlottetown, Address... etc. + signature + date

(+ French translation)

If you do not have a record, there is usually no need for a fingerprint-based search (see the reciprocity thingie: http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/reciproc...ocity_3531.html ) -- I tried to find some "free" places, my friend works in the SQ and gave me the information about the stations around Montreal, but they are "traffic" SQ stations, not "full service" because municipal services are available - and then I figured that the cost of gas and all, well, it was not worth it... call your local station and ask them how to get a certificate with the Canada wide search - this should get you started... bonne chance :P

Don't compare what you have to what others have. I had mine done by the city police, and other than it saying a Canada wide name check was completed, it's not on any type of form. Just two sentences on City police letterhead. As someone earlier mentioned, take it to the police station and just verify that this will suffice. No fingerprinting is done unless you have a record. Look for working that says Canada Wide or CPIC.

I would scan and post it here first. That way you can know for certain if you need to get anything more. Why waste your money if you don't have to?

This is what I found on the RCMP/GRC website:

How can I obtain a Canadian police certificate (record check by name and date of birth only, not fingerprint based)?

In the Montréal area, please contact your local police service or any private company offering this service in your area. These firms can be located in local yellow pages and internet searches using the term "'police clearance", "police check" or "fingerprinting services canada".

In the Québec City area, please contact the Canadian Corps of Commissioners located at 3405 Wilfrid Hamel Blvd., Suite 330, Québec City, Quebec G1P 2J3, Tel.: 418 681-0609, ext. 0. You may also contact your local police service.

Quebec residents living outside the Montréal and Québec City area may go to the nearest RCMP office. Please phone before going to a detachment because an appointment may be required. You may also contact your local police service.

If you are currently outside Canada, you must submit fingerprints to conduct a certified criminal record check. You must be present in Canada in order to obtain a name-based check.

Additionnal Information

  • Contact your nearest RCMP office or your local police service.
