US talk show host David Letterman was targeted in a £1.25MILLION blackmail plot after he had sex with female members of his staff. The presenter of the popular Late Show admitted on the programme last night he HAD had affairs and had been hit by the extortion attempt.

Letterman's alleged blackmailer Robert Halderman,a producer who works on the same US network CBS, demanded the huge sum to keep quiet about the relationships.

Married Emmy-award nominated Halderman, who produces hit show 48 Hours, is believed to have had a relationship with one of Letterman's lovers. She was today named as Stephanie Birkitt, 34, who works with Letterman on the Late Show.

And sources say she is "mortified" Halderman used her relationship with Letterman to blackmail him.

It is claimed she had an affair with the chat show host before he was married. But he was living with his now-wife Regina Lasko at the time.

Birkitt, who started as an intern in the show in 1996 is well known to regulars and still works there.

Halderman is reported to be short of money and decided to target Letterman.

But the producer was arrested yesterday after Letterman contacted police who told him to hand over a phony cheque.

The presenter — who was interviewing Woody Harrelson and Kim Kardashian last night — said it was a "bizarre experience" that left him feeling disturbed and menaced.

Letterman, 62, married his girlfriend of 23-years Lasko last March and the couple have one son together.

Three weeks ago, Letterman said he had found a letter in his car saying: "I know that you do some terrible, terrible things and that I can prove you do some terrible things."

Letterman said he called his lawyer to set up a meeting with the man, who apparently threatened to write a screenplay and a book about Letterman unless he was given money.

He then had two meetings with the man, the last one resulting in the cheque being delivered.

He told the audience that he had to testify before a grand jury on Thursday.

He said: "I was worried for myself, I was worried for my family. I felt menaced by this, and I had to tell them all of the creepy things that I had done."

He also admitted having affairs saying: "The creepy stuff was that I have had sex with women who work for me on this show"

After the confession he received a round of applause from the audience.

He then joked: "And would it have been embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would - especially for the women.

"I know what you're saying, 'I'll be darned, Dave's had sex'.

"That's what the grand jury said also."

Letterman added that he would not be commenting further about the incident.

He said: "So that's where we stand right now. It's been a very bizarre experience.

"I don't plan to say much more about this particular topic."

Even though I normally do not watch the show, I watched it yesterday and couldn't believe people were laughing at what he was saying. A married guy with a child, having an affair with multiple staff. What's funny about that?

That why I stick to Leno and Conan.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I don't watch any of the talk shows - I find them mind bogglingly boring. I have to say my reaction on reading this was '#### me, some chick wanted to have sex with Letterman? Don't that beat all'. :)
