The top surgeon at our local hospital is Muslim and he also is an obgyn, and he did my c-section. He said a prayer in the outer area before performing the c-section, my husband saw him. I don't share his beliefs but first of all, from meeting him at the obgyn office, he was one of the friendliest Dr's I have ever met. And his skill level is superb. And I appreciated the fact he prayed, whatever the reason whether it is a requirement in Islam before touching blood and such or he just wanted to. It's wrong to be biased about faith and a trained Dr, well most people that I know already know that.

I think I would be wary of anyone holding fundamental beliefs of a religious nature that are at odds with scientific knowledge, but that supposes someone like that one would become a Dr and that I would know they held said beliefs, mostly, I can't see how one could possibly know.

Right. I'd be wary of any religious doctor - Muslim or Christian or whatever space god they happen to believe in.

You can live in your little bubble then. I thought I was supposed to be in the bubble, being a Christian and all! :o

Yeah, you're on your own - with prayers before touching blood and all that.

I don't really understand your reply. But anyway, do you need to care whether someone prays in whatever religion they are in before doing something if the result is superb? As long as their prayer wasn't "let me do this horribly" I don't see the problem.

I find it interesting that a thread that started discussing a woman who is now brain-dead after undergoing a cosmetic medical procedure performed by an individual not properly licensed to perform certain procedures has devolved into a racial and religious condemnation based upon the name of the individual. The 'leaps' to conclusions based on absolutely no information or facts is astonishing. Regardless, stop the racial slurs and the derogatory religious comments.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

From a practical point of view, it could/should only be an issue if the religious observance in some way adversely affected the procedure or the patient. Otherwise, it's all down to 'feeling' something is wrong. I do understand however that if you believe that religious belief is rather like believing in fairy stories then it is natural to be a little suspicious of the person's understanding of science and therefore their ability to be a great doctor.

At the end of the day, most of the time people are probably less discerning than they ought to be of who is and who isn't a good Dr, but not because of religious belief, rather because of lack of ability as possibly illustrated by the OP story - possibly, not certainly ;)

You don't find it 'interesting', it offends you.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Pays to know who your Dr really is, and what they are capable of doing - even then things go wrong. Surgery is not foolproof, no matter how routine.

"Dr. Omar J. Brito Marin"

As I'm openly anti-Arab/Muslim, I would never trust a doctor called "Omar".

Me either. I don't care how bad I'd want the fat sucked out.

If she did her research this may not have happened. He wasn't even licensed to do the procedure as he did it.

Yes I agree with the bolded. However I seriously doubt that to be the case of most Dr's who believe in a god or hold religious beliefs. Maybe they should start an Atheist Dr's network for those who are too afraid to trust a fairy stories believing Dr. lol.

Perhaps there is such a thing. I personally am not interested enough in this topic to demand such a service - although yes, I am curious about people who profess to hold certain beliefs in concert with scientific understanding.

Are you also curious about Mark and Amby writing things about not trusting a Dr named Omar? They seem to be getting a free pass from a lot of people. Or people are just ignoring it.

I don't really understand your reply. But anyway, do you need to care whether someone prays in whatever religion they are in before doing something if the result is superb? As long as their prayer wasn't "let me do this horribly" I don't see the problem.

I want a doctor who is rational. Prayer is an irrational superstition.

I guess you are screwed since it's not easy to know what a Dr believes before you use him for services.
