Has anyone here ever heard of anyone getting a visa with a petitioner that was collecting unemployment benefits ? I am the petitioner and im having a great deal of trouble finding a job at the moment. My question is, If i have a family member become a co-sponser and he makes well above the poverty level required and is willing to become a cosponser would you take a chance and file this petition to the philippine embassy? or would you postpone it until i get a job. What are my chances of having the visa denied ? Anyone out there , what are you thoughts ??

Can't give you any odds but your chances are OK. Kind of depends on several things; i.e., work history, previous tax returns (I would certainly include additional years) and perhaps who the co-sponsor is (you didn't mention how they are related, a second cosine for example would not be the best choice). I've see folks on unemployment at the time of their interview be successful.

Approval or denial because of using a co sponsor at USEM is on a case to case basis and all up to the " god "CO you/fiancee gets.

You having good education or good work history is a plus. I imagine [hope] the COs are taking the poor economy into consideration.

The process takes a while and even after the visa is in her hand, it doesn't expire right away. I think she has 6 months or a year to use it (I forget which it is).

I'd go ahead with the process and I'd keep her in the RP until either of 1) I had a job and was comfortably able to support her here in America. 2) The visa was about to expire.

By the time the visa would be about to expire, the economy should be back on track.

I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing someone to the US who likely lives on the edge in the RP only to live on the edge here too. That isn't fun for you or her and could strain the relationship. If you can't do things because you are poor and she has to sit home a lot, that isn't a good thing. The RP is very crowded and many people are used to being around a lot of family, friends and neighbors then they get here and it is so so so different so take this into consideration. They might not have much money in the RP, but they have family, friends and neighbors. Here in the US, neighbors don't know neighbors, friends don't visit friends unless they call first, family are spread throughout the country <-- this is completely different than in the RP so think about the environment you can provide with little income.
