Hello,

So we've had our interview as regards AOS and I was approved but didn't get my passport stamped with I-551. The lady who conducted the interview printed a paper stating that I received AOS for 2 yrs time and then will have to fill I-751 to prolong it for 10 yrs. Do I have to get the infopass and came to the office to request an I-551 stamp or I can go to Ukraine without it?

If someone had been in this situation please clarify? Thank you.

You should get your greencard in the mail within the next few weeks. You need that greencard to be able to return to the US, so do not leave without it.

No, The I-551 stamp is a temp greencard to cover until the actual greencard arrives in the mail. Some offices give it and others dont. You do not need that stamp to travel as long as you have your greencard.

They do not generally issue the I-551 stamp unless you ask for it and then only if you need it. Without an AP, no, you cannot go to Ukraine and return without a green card. You can go back (infopass) and ask for the I-551 but they may not give it to you. It may not be correct to say they would not "let you back in" they probably would, but not without a hassle. If you have an AP....Bon Voyage. If not, wait for the green card or you can try to get an I-551 stamp.

We had our green cards 2 weeks after AOS interview. You could also ask them to forward the green card to the consulate in Kiev (we did that for our son, a student in Moscow) but then you have to stay until the green card arrives. Not a proble for a college student who will be there 10 months anyway, maybe more of a problem for you.

In order to leave and return you need to have...

1. Advance Parole (AP) OR

2. I-551 stamp in passport OR

3. Green card.

Without one of those you will have trouble to leave and return.

Once AOS is approved the AP is no longer valid. The only acceptable proof of being a LPR and being admitted into the US is a greencard or I-551 stamp.

You could be right about the AP issued during the AOS process, not sure. But APs can be issued to LPRs for specific trips. We got one for our son to attend college as he will be out of the country for 10 months.
