Here is the scenario. I am a US Citizen (currently unemployed) and my wife is currently H1B. I am filing for a change to permanent resident status (I-485) for my wife. We both lived in the same residence. So I wrote 2 for question 21h in I864 household size.

I will be using both my parents as joint sponsor so my Mom will be filling out the I-864 and my Dad will be the I-864A.

Both my parents (Mom & Dad) together with my sister and grandmother live in a separate residence in another state. My grandmother was also sponsored (filed w/ I864 and I864A) by my parents. So I assume 4 persons in their household size.

My question is about my MOM (as joint sponsor) in filling out her I-864 on household size.

Here is the form:

Your Household Size - DO NOT COUNT ANYONE TWICE

Part 5. Sponsor's household size.

Persons you are sponsoring in this affidavit:

a. Enter the number you entered on line 10. ----------------------------------1 (My wife)

Persons NOT sponsored in this affidavit:

b. Yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------1 (Mom)

c. If you are currently married, enter "1" for your spouse. -------------------1 (Dad)

d. If you have dependent children, enter the number here -------------------1 (My sister)

e. If you have any other dependents, enter the number here. ---------------0

f. If you have sponsored any other persons on an I-864 or I-864 EZ---------1 (Grandma)

who are now lawful permanent residents, enter the number here.

g. OPTIONAL: If you have siblings, parents, or adult children with

the same principal residence who are combining their income

with yours by submitting Form I-864A, enter the number here.

h. Add together lines and enter the number here. Household Size: -----------4 or 5 ???

My question is on 21h. My wife lives with me in a different state so do they have to count my wife in their total household size?

So is it 4 or 5? B)

It is 5. The person being sponsord is always counted in the household size - whether or not they live with the sponsor/co-sponsor.
