It's been so long since Ive been on here that Ive forgotton my user name .. so have had to re-register. I wasn't going to bother with going for citizenship as next year we'll be heading back to the UK. I've had to rethink this though as my husband is just about to retire from his job and so we've been looking at social security and how all of this would affect our position when we eventually return to the UK. Anyway I thnk maybe I should just play it safe and apply for the citizenship.

I'm just hoping that the whole process will be over and done with as quickly as possible. We'll be going through Atlanta - anyone have any thoughts on the timelines?? ohhh I dont want to sitting here in 9/10 months time!!

I think you are doing the right thing going for citizenship first, because then you are keeping your options open if ever you want come back here. Just imagine having to go through the whole process again if you changed your minds and wanted to return, because if you were just a permanent resident you would be considered as abandoning your residency.

I can't speak for Atlanta, but most places seem to be getting through citizenship in 3-5 months. I had to go through Indy and it has taken me almost a year, but that's not the norm.

My husband started the naturalization process in mid June and was sworn in as a U.S. citizen by early December 2008 (roughly 5 months)

Hi Carie,

I am going through the Atlanta office as are a few others if you look at the timelines for April and May. I applied April 30 and have my interview August 13. Atlanta does have the option for a same day oath ceremony if your interview is in the morning (mine is at 1:05 so unlikely for me). Hope that helps give you some idea of the current time line.
