Dang. Aren't cell to cell international calls just hideously expensive no matter what?

Can you not use landlines or chat on Skype for free? Are one or both of you without household phones or PC's?

hi there,

unfortunately that is exactly our problem. Since I wont have an apartment by the end of july I wont have a home phone anymore. And in the US we just use our cellphones, since we are both not the biggest fans of calling peeps :P. And if we do, we have a good cellular contract which allows us to call peeps free after 6pm. I wont be able to chat anymore (currently we chat every other day) so there is no big phone bill (otherwise I have a very cheap number to call him from my homephone).

it all will depend on the service provider you have here in the states..

I have Verizonwireless.. I pay $3.99 month to get special price for international calls.

I just looked and currently for Germany with the international plan on mobile verizon.. you get it for .10 cent min until July 31 then after that it is out of promotion dates. and rates are .20 cent a min

my cost to India is .30 cent a min.. and have had to resort to this for a much better phone connection instead of the phone card of .14 cent a min .a ugh.. .. better to hear then spend 1/2 the time asking what what what?? ha ah haha

we also have verizon over there in the US, so there is a special offer for internat. calls?? Uh thats news.

Thanks I.

Isabel,

See if your man can get vonage over there...not really sure about Germany tho. THey can give a virtual number which means it'll be a local call for you. D used it and set it up so that when I'm out on my mobby, I can call him and the number starts with the same area code that I'm in now.

We have Vonage, not sure how much a minute is is to call the UK though, no one i know in the UK has it, so maybe its 16c a minute??

But i call the UK useing my mobile @ 6C a minute, i dread the bill coming in though :o .but I have to talk to "The English People" to keep my sanity

Vonage from us to uk is free now with a new promo I think.

His vonage in the UK is free incoming calls...and with his virtual number which is a central Fl number, it's free for me to call him, and free for him to get the call.

If he called me from the vonage phone, it's 2cents a minute.

He still pays the line rental to bt, but I think the vonage is costing like 8quid for the basic thing, then like 3 more for a virtual FL number. So all in all, a good deal

So if i call useing Vonage, its FREE??......or do i have to request summat onto of the $24.99 we already pay???

Edited to say................Mark got Vonage when i was still in the uk, i was going to get it(in UK) but never did!!............so the 2 numbers i call in the UK are both regular lines NOT vonage  .....it was Mark who told me it was 16c a minute to call the uk, maybe he should look into that!! ya think??..........cos FREE is way better than 6c

All those really cheap rates (or free like in vonage) are to regular landlines, not to mobiles.

I'm sort of in the same situation... I only use a cell. I've got internet, but the problem is one of timing. by the time he gets done with work, he's off to bed, and when I get up in the morning, he's off to work so there's no sit down in front of the computer and chat time for us.

He makes time a few times a week, but it ends up costing him a fortune becuase he's calling to a cell here in the states, and if I call there it's more expensive. Right now we do most of our communication through texting. It gets a bit expensive for me, but not as much as talking on the phone would be. it's about $.15 per text whereas a phone call would be $.20 per minute. It's also easier to keep in contact during the day because texting is asynchronous, which means he can just reply whenever he has time, and then so can I. We can both get on with work/life without having to set aside some time for a phone call. I look forward to our phonecalls though, especially since they are so rare. Even rarer are those times we can sit down in front of the webcam and have a face to face conversation. makes me miss him even more when I see him though.

Yep, I don't know if old customers of Von were automatically switched over or not, but it's free now..and yeah, i forgot to mention that it's landlines only

VonUK is cool tho too...D has it at home, and as I said, has that 'virtual number'.....now there is also a forwarding feature that I access for his acct. If he's out, I go into the acct online & put his mobby in the call diversion configuration. Now it would be FREE to call it, but the downside is that he would have to pay on the mobby. The weekend is only 5p a min, so it's not the end of the world & it's deffo cheaper than the 31 cents I would have to pay...

At the same time, I can put my virtual UK number to route to my mobby here, and he can call me off his mobby as long as he has the minutes on his plan.

Sheesh, i have a headache now, lol

Use a calling card with your cell phone. You just use up cell minutes and the phone card minutes.

The problem with those kind of calling cards is that there is one rate to a landline, and a completely different rate to call TO cellphones. Usually a 200 minute calling card ends up only being 30 when you call a cell.

So this doesn't really help the OP, since she's already tried calling cards, but they get expensive when you're just calling to a cell and not to a landline.
