You need to wait for at least 2 weeks after you arrived here in the US to be able to obtain SS number because SSA must see whether you are on DHS system (and their system) already. Otherwise you will be wasting your precious time. You don't have to have SSN to get married...

Depends, some state requires to have SSN to get marriage license.Better ask your county office first what are the requirements to get marriage license,if don't need SSN,then just apply SSN after you get married, because if you will apply ssn now using your maiden name, you need to come back again at SSA to change it to your married name.

Get SSN as soon as possible, don`t procastinate it. When I applied for the first time after marriage, they not issue me a number because my visa was about to expired that time...don`t apply SSN if your visa was about to expire...Apply soon!Good luck.

Hi. I applied for SSN two days after I arrived in the United states. I got my SSN 3 weeks later in the mail. How's that? But for purposes of getting married, you don't need SSN.

The USCIS recommends waiting at least 10 days after POE before applying to ensure that you are in the SS data bank.

It is much easier to apply for your SSN before marriage because of the last name change, because it is 2 step process - applying for number and then applying for the name change.

i agree because this is what i did also... 14 days after i got here i went in and applied for the SSN and i got my number right away (they will mail the card in 2 weeks usually), i then applied for a marriage license (though in my state i dont think they need an ssn to get married) but it sure does help on getting health insurance and joint bank account coz they all asked me for my SSN...

after i got my GC, i then went the SSA to change my name on my SSN card and then i applied for a Driver's license... i wish you luck!!!

Citizenship N-400

4/15/2010- sent my N-400 via fedex overnight

4/16/2010- signed and delivered

4/29/2010- check cleared

There's no SSN requirement in marriage anywhere in the state. That's the fact. I know most of the vj's here got their SSN earlier before marriage. But in my case, I just got SSN when I started working. I got here, got married, filed AOS without SSN (cuz it is not needed in AOS, but if you want to file for joint bank account then you need SSN, but in my case we didn't file and our proof of relationship during our AOS interview was only 3 wedding photos and credit card and it went good). When I found my job that was the time I filed for SSN and it was great cuz I don't have to go back to SSA to have my name change. But it is up to you when you want, I just shared my experience.
