Naturalization question

Hi everyone!

There is a question on N-400 regarding affiliation with communist party. It reads like that: "Have you ever been a member of or in any way associated (either directly or indirectly) with the Communist party?" I was a member of "Oktyabryata" in elementary school and then became a "Pioner" in the end of the 3rd grade. Soviet Union collapsed when I was about to start 5th grade, so I obivously never been a member of "Komsomol" or the Communist Party (KPSS) itself. Should I just answer "no" or should I answer "yes" and provide the explanation?

We have not gotten to naturalization yet but we came upon this question before and my husband said yes and wrote one sentence like : Oktyabryata and Pioner, youth groups of the communist party. He's now here with a green card.

I would answer it no. Almost everybody who grew up in the FSU was a member of Oktyabryata, and although Oktyabryata was a state sponsored organization, it was not the Communist party, nor was it political in nature other than to teach children how to be good Soviet citizens.

When my 1st wife got to this point, she answered "no" and had no problems.

I would answer know unless you are communist spy then answer yes but dont explain.

Remember, on all government forms - KISS.

If you weren't a member of a communist party then answer no. Don't get into a debate over if it's "technically the feeder organization for communist supporting groups" or "I would've been" or "It could be construed as a communist group." If it's a group for kids, it's a group for kids, plain and simple.
