Hi guys,

I just had my oath ceremony (at last!) and I'm wondering if I have to go to DMV to update my information. I know that I will have to go to SSA office and get a passport, but I havent read anything here about updating my DMV information. What else is next after oath, SSA and passport?

Thanks a bunch.

Which state DMV?

I don't think you would need to bother in Pennsylvania - they haven't asked for any immigration documents at all for my last two license renewals and there's no immigration status indication on a PA license. If in Texas then probably yes, I hear there's a different format for non-citizen license there. Very state specific....

No, my wife doesn't have to do anything. Nor did I when I became a citizen many years ago. If you expect to live here and get SS pension in your old age and or medicare etc. then you need to update you info at the SS office (my wife isn't going to do that as she will not have enough work history to get a SS pension and we won't be living in USA when we are eligible for Medicare (65). And you get your passport from the Post office (or a passport facility if you choose to expedite). So, No DMV - SS and Post-office for Passport. Good Luck

Hi Sakura888 (and Everyone),

Congrats on being a new US citizen recently!

Hmmm...I'm not at the USC stage of the immigration game yet (though soon to be), but these are the following government agencies that I will inform and update them about my new US Citizenship Status after I receive such:

-SSA (just in case......)

-DMV (lol..I want a NYS Enhanced Driver's License, convenient for land border crossings for USCs)

-Voter's Registration (I want to vote in the USA)

-Passport Office (I want a US Passport, good to show US Citizenship, and good for all international travel. Note: Do this one last, as they want the original certificate and it will be awhile before one gets it back.)

-Any other government or non-government agency that wants such information....I have it, why not flaunt it...just kidding...but who knows what agency will require the updated information and need such....

Also if you are working, you should also inform your employer about the USC update too....

Any other agencies, organizations, places, etc. I'm missing on this list?

Good luck with the rest of your life journeys too.

I did, after all that BS they put us through with an expired green card and that crazy one year extension notice, what in the hell is an extension notice. After fighting with the governor's newly appointed immigration officer that didn't even know how to spell immigration, we got her license renewed for the full eight years in my state.

So I walk in to talk to the same guy that started all of our problems to show him her brand new shiny USC certificate. He didn't even want to look at it, but I said, isn't she in your database as a LPR? Never answered that simple question, but when she does come in, all she has to do is to check that USC box and all will be fine.

Snapped back, couldn't an illegal also check that box and get a license? He said, he doesn't make the rules, just obeys them, and that is all the state checks, which box is checked. But no box for an illegal to check.

Same with voter registration, no proof, you just swear in an oath your are a USC.

Too bad the USCIS doesn't operate that, at my wife's interview, her IO didn't even want to meet me, it was I that brought her here. But a good thing I added my wife to my electrical bill that was just a phone call without proof, her IO wanted another piece of paper to prove we were living together, apparently that 3 1/2 stack of evidence we already had supplied over the last five years was not enough for her.

Ever get the feeling with dealing with our governmental agencies, you are dealing with idiots? Has, anybody taken the time to think things out? Or is thinking taboo with our government.

Really would like to test the legality of that oath I had to take to serve my country when I was drafted. If I didn't say that oath, would have been tossed in jail. But with that oath, was given the power to do a lot of damage, it's crazy!

Thanks guys.

Phl_nov08, I live in VA. I dont even know if that matters to them. Anyway, I will check as AntandD said that she will nofify NY DMV, maybe VA has that rule too.

NickD, WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE WHEN IT COMES TO THESE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES!!! I am praying for a smarter SSA officer when I go to their office and update my status. I'm also praying for a smarter passport officer when I go there to apply for a passport.

We have had some people at the oath ceremony that didnt make it clear on how to sign the certificate and after we signed it, then they told us that "you should have signed it this way and not that way!" How could they expect everyone to know that? They should have briefed all of the new citizens on how to sign their signatures before they made them do so. That's a smarter way to do it instead of telling the confused new citizens what they did wrong after they already committed the mistake. But nah, none of them thought of that. They said we can always order a new/replacement of the certificate which costs around 500 dollars. AND THEY ARE NOT KIDDING.
