I dont know if anyone can help me out but it would be really cool if they could lol.

Im going to be moving to Nebraska, Bellevue.

I have a canadian G2, I was thinking to get my G but it will cost me 100$ and I read that most states make you take the writen and drivers test again anyways? Does anyone know if they do that in nebraska? Or do they just convert over my license to their state license? (would be really nice )

I searched all over nebraska DMV website but i cant find anything anywhere about changing it over at all!!

It will be a waste to pay 100$ and then just have to retest completely for a license there.

I dont have alot of cash and its tapping us out pretty quickly specially saving for AOS lol.

I had a quick search on their website and could also not find anything. I don't even know if we have any members on the form living in Nebraska to answer your question. Just give them a call and see what they say. Most DMV websites have the rules for both out of state and out of country drivers. Many states you just need to take the written test, some you have to take the road and written tests again and then some states you just change out your licenses and that's it.

If you aren't being forced to get your G, I wouldn't if you are planning on being licensed in Nebraska eventually.

Did you say Bellevue?!?!?! I thought I was the only one moving to NE!! Woot! Another Canadian!! :D

I emailed the DMV a while back about the licence issue and they really did not give me a definitive answer. The answer that I got was that the DL does not expire based on immigration documents. That could all be changing though due to the new laws going into effect in NE July 20th I believe. You will need 2 items for proof of residence and an SSN. The licence will no longer be handed out to you at the time of applying, you will get it in the mail instead. I think for the US based ID requirement we may be able to use military dependant ID.

I do not know if they will accept the K-1 I-94 that is only good for 90 days. I have read in other states the I-94 needs to be valid for 6 months- 1 year for them to be able to get a licence. I asked them that too...and no freakin answer!! I really do not want to wait until my EAD, because I also have my car to import and register..within 30 days..but how can I drive a NE car without a NE licence? UGGH!! I really hope they do not make us do a road test! When I lived in ND and had to get the state licence the last year I was there, all I had to do was an eye exam.

Hey there,

I moved to Florida for a year back in 04-05. I had a G2. Before moving down, I called the DMV and asked them about it and the guy confirmed with me that my G2 could be traded in for a full Florida license. I'm not sure about Nebraska, but I would recommend calling them to hopefully get a confirmed answer.

Do you still have the ND license? Is it still valid? Because an out of state licensing issue can be very different than an out of country licensing issue.

No I had to give it up when I moved back to SK and got a SK licence. The ND licence expired based on my EAD.

Hi Inky,

I don't know about Nebraska...but...From my experience....

When I was in Canada (Ontario), I had a G2 license only. I moved to New York State, USA, bought my Canadian license to the DMV and....

I was in and out the DMV in 10 minutes...volia....a full non-restricted D class license (which is equivalent to a G class Canadian license)....(I got the temporary paper license right away, and the card in the mail a week later which is valid for 5 years...lol...longer than my 2 yr green card....)

No further questions asked (well, except for a very easy eye exam), and no need for another road test or written test....

The NYS DMV rocks!!!!

I didn't think it was fair anyways that in Ontario/Canada one has to go through one written and two road tests (what a waste!),

versus here in New York State/USA one has to go through only one written and one road test

Sigh, if only I had learned to drive in the first place here in the USA instead of Canada...Oh the money and time I would have saved over the years!

I agree, you shouldn't have to pay for and waste more time doing more driving tests, when you've done such already in Canada.

Hmmm...In your situation....

1) First of all, does Nebraska offer a Canadian/American direct no-testing license transfer? If so, that's a good. No worries there. Note: This 'direct transfer' varies from state to state, some do it, some don't, so do inquire further with the DMV about this.

2) Second of all, did you keep any copies of your G2 road and written test results? If so, you can bring those to you with the DMV. Thus, if they do inquire further, they can "compare" your former results with your former driving tests, to see if you meet and pass their "equivalent" standards in tests (which you probably do anyways, as the graduated licensing system in Canada is more difficult than the licensing system here in the USA).

Hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of your immigration and your driving journeys too.

P.S. I forgot to mention that my 5yr NYS license cost $45...and identification-wise, they mainly wanted to see the following documents to get such a license: my former Canadian driver's license for the transfer (and they kept it too), my marriage certificate, my 2yr green card, my SSN, and something with my address on it...

Hope this helps too.

I asked my Sister about this today. They had to take a written driving test and were then given their Nebraska licenses.

New York State definitely has one of what appears to be the easiest processes for driver's licenses in the US I've seen. My brother played hockey in NYS for 4 months this year and he was given a license that definitely did not expire on the same day his I-94 did. He got one for 5 years I believe...and he's not even a resident. He's already home in Canada now.

I don't know anything about Nebraska, I just wanted to give my well wishes. I just moved to CO this week, good to see I'm not the only one moving to the wild west!

I also have an Ontario G2. I didn't bother getting my G for the same reasons you described... I figured it was quite possible I'd have to go take a new test either way, and from what I've been told from my fiance and other Coloradans, road tests here are easy. Passing the G in Ontario isn't always that simple... I have several friends who had to retake it multiple times. I'm not sure if I'll be forced to take a new test, but I have discovered that I need to wait for my EAD or my GC to get the license if I don't want it valid for only only 90 days. It seems that many states are using this system now...
