In fairness though - the IRA never justified its activities as being sanctioned by God. There is a bit of a difference IMO.

We had our share of zealots in the middle ages - and terrorism arising from the Reformation (the most famous being the gunpowder plot against King James), but terrorism arising from the Irish Troubles in the 20th century was never about religion specifically as the UK was by then a largely secular State.

The common strands between the radical organisations is they tend to use the zeolousness of youth to further their ends. You would have thought by now that NI was fed up with terrorism but while the organisations are small, the violent factions still persist:

Why are all Muslims responsible for what some Muslims do? I remember not too long ago (and maybe still today) Black people I knew praying that a heinous criminal being sought wasn't Black because all Blacks would be seen as part of the problem. Most Muslims get up every day, go off to work, raise their kids, enjoy their friends and just live their lives. They have no way of influencing the radicals among them any more than the Christians, Hindus or atheists among us have of halting the crazies among them. Are we the new Blacks now?

It was the Spainish pure Catholicsm belief that initiated the Crusades. This was a very long time ago! Under Elizabeth of England, after Mary (bloody Mary who killed Calvinists, Protestants, etc to force people to believe in Catholicm) died, she made England less of Catholic belief.

Anyway, with this in mind, I don't believe that all Catholic are evil. I mean Calvinists and Protestants aren't true Catholic eventhough they differ in a certain view that you will have a chance to goto heaven if you do good deeds changing you from evil to good. Whereas in pure Catholism, if you already commited a sin, you will not goto heaven (This is why Calvinists changed everything in the 15th century or was it 16th for Europe).

Calvinists are an off-shoot of the early Protestant movement, but weren't the first there, nor can be given full credit for turning Western Europe away from Roman Catholicism. Protestantism was already well on the rise by the time John Calvin wrote his first significant religious commentary in 1536. By then, the Church of England, for example, had already formed in 1534.

Martin Luther was first, followed straight behind by Huldrych Zwingli and John Calvin.
