This election was supposed to be without any national issue. The Indian voter, however, had different ideas — he has voted with his feet for a coherent and stable government. Manmohan Singh is set to take charge as Prime Minister and become the only PM since Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961 to be voted back after completing a full five-year term. What's more, he will head a government without the support of the Left, whimsical partners like Mayawati or any other coercive ally. The middle class will be heaving a sigh of relief.

Does that mean he has a majority government?

Dr. Singh's UPA coalition will have a majority, yes. The Congress party by itself will not (because they didn't contest many seats, ceding them to coalition partners instead). He won't need Communist support anymore, which is kickass.

Replying to Capitalist secularists assrape Communists and Hindu fundamentalists in Indian election

That definitely is NOT the headline as written in Times of India - but even in my very very novice understanding of Indian politics this is a good thing. I'm glad the elections are over - Mr. Milo75 is in Srinagar and it's been strike after freaking strike. He's looking forward to strike - maybe a whole whopping 10 days of no strike - then another freaking strike. It's the 10 day break that will make it nice :luv: .

is this a common event in india?

Elections or assraping? Yes, on both counts

And to think I'm planning on being there until 9-2010...sounds like a heck of a time.

No worries, like America, assrape is primarily a male on male phenomenon. Prisons, gangs, so forth.

I am pleased to hear that violence was manageable in the kashmir valley this year! I recall when I was in India in the late 80s and early 90s the terr'ists went nuts during elections. Peace at last?

Ummm, sort of....I guess there is still the ocassional uprising/fighting but mainly by the LOC. He's been home on and off over the last few months and while on the phone I only hear the occasional fighter jet/helocopter/gunshots. Much better than the late 80s and early 90s from what he tells me.

If everything goes as planned I'll be in Srinagar sometime in July and I can provide an on-the-ground assessment - it will probably be something along the lines of "omg - there are sooooooooo many soldiers and check points".

Thankfully, we'll be living in Delhi as our main residence...
