So I have a letter saying the petition was approved (I'm the petitioner), and shortly after, I received form I-797.

Now, we have an interview date as well.

I keep seeing people saying "you need your NOA2" for adjustment of status, for interview, etc. I assume that's form I-797? I know what NOA-2 means basically... but is there an actual form that says "NOA-2?"

Also, does "packet 3" refer to the email from the consulate explaining the needed documents and interview date?

Silly questions.. just getting the pre-interview jitters.

I-797 is indeed the NOA2. The form does not seem to say anywhere on it NOA2, and I don't think there is one that says NOA2.

Packet 3 is the communication that you receive from the Embassy with information of the next actions needed before you have your interview.

I claim it in the name of the Empire

Actually, never mind.. I just noticed VJ's list!

For anyone wondering;

The "NOA" is internet-speak for the I-797 "Notice of Action" -- with "NOA1" being the receipt and "NOA2" being the notice of approval. [Please note that there is the possibility of other I-797's being generated prior to approval notices].

No. I-797 is a "notice of action" It can be many actions for many processes. You will receive MANY I-797s in this process from I-129 until AOS. NOA2 is VJ lingo, there is no such thing (officially) as NOA2.

The first I-797 you receive (NOA #1) is usually a receipt. While you will never find "NOA1" written on that form, (you will find "Notice of Action") you will find text printing in English. Read it. It will tell you what it is and what to do next (including doing nothing next)

The next I-797 you receive will be "NOA #2". Hopefully that will be an approval, but could also be an RFE. Again the text print on the letter will tell you exactly what it is and what to do. If it is an RFE then your approval will come on "NOA3" hopefully. Unless NOA3 is another RFE.

Always read what they send you

You will need the copy of your approval notice for the AOS. Packet 3 is forms and instructions for the interview, it can usually be downloaded and consulates are quickly moving away from mailing these anymore (Thank goodness!) Go to the consulate website and download the forms and instructions
