Okay, so my fiance' and I own (all in my name) a timeshare in Orlando. I JUST got a call from a salesperson wanting us to convert from weeks to points... which we both would love to do! But, again, you've got to drop some cash on the spot, as everything with real estate has fees (kinda like the US Gov't.).

I tried to politely explain that I appreciated her taking the time to call my cell phone after calling my home phone and not reaching anyone, but, there was no way in which we'd be able to afford to convert to points at this time. We have zero extra cash. We're planning a wedding AND going through immigration. We have zero extra cash. Did I mention zero extra cash??

Anyway, she kept badgering me about this opportunity how they dropped the minimum rates and requirements, etc. and I told her that as much as we would like to do this, we can't because we have zero extra cash. She said something about perhaps using savings or credit cards (and yes, she was serious!) to do this. Then I basically lost it... although I was still trying very, very hard to be polite while losing it with her.

I told her that the the wedding monies alone were more than we could currently handle due to the costs of immigration, and I shared with her that as of right now, we've sunk almost $3,000 or $4,000 in the immigration process, and we're still not done. Then, she said the most ignorant things I think I've ever heard. "Are you sure it is that expensive? I just can't believe it would be that expensive! Have you really researched this? There's no way it can be that costly. You need to hire a lawyer to mak sure you're doing this right because you shouldn't be paying that much... it's only Canada, for crying out loud."

By that time, I was laughing because I was so unbelievably annoyed at her ignorance! She kept saying that she was from Ohio and she can't believe that anything like immigration would cost anything. All because she would go visit Canada all the time. REALLY??? Are you kidding me??? SERIOUSLY??? :wow: She just kept going on and on and on.... Then, when I told her we started with an attorney, she said that the attorney must not be doing their job if we had to fork out so much money.

So, as if that wasn't enough, she continued to "run the numbers" even though I told her that no matter how the numbers come out, we weren't going to do it. No matter what. We have zero extra cash. Then, by the end of the phone call (thank GOD!!!) she said something along the lines of well, I guess you're not going to do this, are you. Yea, brainiac... good call. I could have saved her all that time and she could have moved on to another client if she just would have listened to me in the first few moments of the call. In addition, I could have saved myself the agony of listening to her get "Personally bothered that someone is getting taken like this." Yeah, she said that - word for word.

OMG... what a dumba$$. :bonk: But, then again, had it not happened, I'm not sure I'd have as good of a story to make people who understand the process laugh!

Damn talk about pushy! But my in-laws and actually alot of people I meet don't believe the whole immigration process. Nor do they understand it! My in-laws were sure I could work as soon as I arrived here. After all, I'm only "Canadian" and not a foreigner! Seriously that's what they said! The other thing was that they were certain we did not have to marry within 90 days. They thought that was ridiculous and couldn't be true

Yeah I have some family members and friends who think the same way...Some of them say oh well your citizenship thing that you are going through right now! I have to explain to them that I do not automatically become a citizen when I move there! The look on their face is usually  I really get sick of explaining myself, I have learned to keep talk about immigration short and to the point! Yes people do not believe that I am not allowed to work for around 90 days either! Hence why we have illegal workers in the US...the legal immigration process is expensive, lengthly and involves red tape!! *sigh....sorry a bit OT there!

I was just explaining to a friend of mine today the immigration process - and costs. She was appalled and 'apologized' on behalf of all Americans for making us jump through all of these ridiculous, expensive hoops. I thought that was nice of her.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I must applaud you for just laughing! I would have lost it on that woman! A friend of mine said something similar a couple weeks back and I got SOOOO mad! Who are you to tell me how much immigration should cost? Have you ever done it? I think not!! Especially when he said, "oh well they can't make you get the garadisil vaccinations, that's unconstitutional." :bonk: I'm not even going to touch that.

Everytime I fly to Canada people are surprised that is more expensive than flying to Seattle.

ME: I then say well it is an international flights and international flights have more fees and are more expensive.

THEM:You are going to Canada that's not international.

ME:Ahhhh yes it is...USA and Canada are not the same country.

THEM: Well ya, but we are almost the same.

ME: Well the Canadians might have something to say about that thought....

To be fair... some U.S. airlines list flights to and from Canada as "domestic." So I could see how someone might make that mistake.

In relation to the sales lady. I would have hung up on her. However, I don't own a timeshare so I don't know the relation between owning a timeshare and being rude to the lady.

The immigration thing = ridiculous. But since my family is full of immigrants they understand a little bit more than others. lol My Oma said "I don't want you to leave Canada but who am I to talk I left two countries before I came here"

Even better -- try to freak her out. I love doing that. Just start talking about cats made of cottage cheese and chilled money brains. They'll shut up fast. :D

Yeah at Pearson there's "international flights" then there's "American flights." But since they all require passports now, I'd say its definitely international despite some airports and airlines distinctions. Flying to and within Canada is just ridiculously expensive compared to air travel pretty much anywhere else. There's definitely a lack of competition in the Canadian airline industry... Flying Buffalo-Denver opposed to Toronto-Denver is about half price, no exaggeration. I can go from buffalo from $250-$300 but you'd be lucky to get anything out of Toronto for less than $500. My sister lived in Calgary for a while and she used to pay $800+ to come back home. That's just insane! (I think I went off on a little tangent... :P)

Bill's parents own a timeshare so we timeshare freeload :D

In the saleslady's defense, I find that everyone I talk to, whether yanks or canucks, all find how difficult and expensive the process is to be very suprising. Every time I get annoyed with what a giant hassle this all is, I have a moment of thanks for not being gay, because then what do you do if the person you love is from a different country?

Anyway, I find the best way to get rid of a pushy salesperson is to say "i'm sorry I need to spend all of my disposable income on therapy. It's one of the conditions of my release." That's a pretty handy conversation stopper.
