Most countries with socialised healthcare have the option of private insurance - either for comprehensive coverage, or top-ups and subsidised payments for procedures that aren't available through the regular healthcare system.

Its called Two-tier healthcare.

We haz zome of zhat. It ztill iz teh zuck :(

I find that people complain about what they have - wherever they are.

Personally though I wouldn't trade the NHS with its long (free at point of use) outpatient waits for those slightly shorter waits at the offices of specialist doctors and the surprise charges they spring on you months later.

I tell you brother; when I lived in Mexico I never had to set foot in a public run hospital. I could afford private care. Yet I can give you one example:

My cousin B was born with a seriously fvcked up heart. Private cardiologists did not have the equipment/facilities to do ####### for her (and we're talking about top notch fvckers). So she was placed on teh waiting list for the National Institute of Cardiology and Vascular whatnot. Stayed on the damn list for a loooong time :( --- but once she went in, her (L) was fixxored, and although they did pay something (proportionate to my uncle and aunt's incomes), public health care saved her life. Now imagine being my cousin and not having the option...

That's true, I used to moan about the NHS at one point but once I saw/experienced the health care system in the USA, I thought about how lucky I really was. Shocked to see, even someone having health insurance wasn't guaranteed to see a doctor, not even for a minor ailment.

Personally, I never had any complaint about the health care system in Germany - East or West for that matter.

Clearly, she'd feel differently if she would have been exposed to the outrageously expensive poor excuse of a health care system that we have to deal with around here.
