Am I going to need to track down my ex to get a travel consent from him? I have sole custody of the girls, just want to make sure.

I-129F sent: August 18th, 2006

NOA2: October 2nd, 2006

Packet 3 returned to Mtl: October 26th, 2006.

Medical: January 10th, 2007

Interview: January 23rd, 2007, at 2:30. APPROVED

Entry to the US: Feb 28th, 2007 POE Ivy Lea

Married: March 2nd, 2007

AOS/EAD sent May 4th, 2007

NOA1s for all 3 AOS and my EAD May 14th, dated for May 10th

EAD touched May 28th,29th, 2007, Youngest daughter's AOS touched May 29th, 2007

Biometrics: May 30th, 2007

All cases touched May 31, 2007, June 5th, 2007, August 1st, 2007

All 3 AOS transferred to California July 5th, 2007

EAD Approved July 27th, 2007

Finally movement on my AOS, touched on Feb 22 & 24th

GC May 11 2008, date of april 29th on them.

I think that would be based on the state/country/custody arrangement.

If you have sole custody, then perhaps you do not have to. You will need to check - best to know then get dinged at the border!

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

They're with you now in the States and you're visiting back home in Canada or visiting elsewhere? I know with my daughter, she obviously has her Canadian passport for getting back into Canada and we have never been asked for custody papers when returning to the US and using our Greencards. Doesn't prevent me from bringgng the same custody papers that I took to montreal when we got the K1 though....just in case I need back-up.

I would think having the GC implies that you've already satisfied the custody requirements to get it.

We would just be heading back to Canada for a few days. I'm just really paranoid about border crossings, got burnt really bad once so now I'm freakish about having all the paperwork that I might possibly need :blush:

I haven't had any trouble crossing with my daughter and she looks nothing like me or her stepdad (he and I are white, she's mixed) so hopefully you're good to go!

The US guys totally could care less as far as I can see, you hand the GC through the window, they scan it or whatever they do and you're on your way.

BTW - now that she's 17 - we don't even bring the custody stuff along anymore.

I've been asked for proof of consent to take my girls into Canada on several occasions. And in fact, my husband has been asked for the same thing taking his Canadian children BACK to Canada!! Better to have the paper, IMO.

I am with MsZ on this one. I have been asked for papers by both the Canadian and US officials. It usually doesn't happen but I think it depends on the mood of the officer you are dealing with. I would not take the chance if you can get consent from your ex. If you track him down and he is willing, I would advise getting a "blanket" consent from him. That way you won't have to track him down every time. My ex provided me with one and we have been asked for it a couple times and so far the "blanket" consent has worked every time.

The one officer asked that my ex-husband's phone number be placed on the consent as well.

My experience has been that females tend to request documentation more often than males. However, I've been asked for it by both sexes.
