I do not mean to be rude, but why don't you check out the guide section of VJ first? The AOS info on there is pretty clear.

Also, have you already actually read the CIS instructions for Form I-485 (www.uscis.gov; the most recent version of the forms is on there)? It should answer your questions...

Many times if you receive a letter requesting you to take your fingerprints again it means that the prints they took the first time were not clear enough or good enough for the FBI security check to use. Since the security check is an important part of the process, they will ask you to re-do the fingerprints so the check can be done. There have been a few individuals here whose second prints have also not been good enough and they have been told that they must obtain police clearance statements for the time since they have been in the US proving that they do not have a criminal history. If you use your fingers a lot (ie certain occupations ) the fingerprints can actually be worn or damaged and it is hard to obtain a good image.

The other occasion when you may be asked to re-do fingerprints is if they are expired - USCIS only keeps them for 15 months although they have also sent out requests for new fingerprints if the last ones were a year ago for the same application.

Just redo the fingerprints and don't worry - it isn't a usual event but it happens often enough not to be a cause for concern. It is just another administrative detail. Good luck.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
