QUESTIONS ASKED IN INTERVIEW

Just trying to get a feel for what has been asked recently.... trying to get prepared.

Also, I posted a question a while back and most people said I had nothing to worry about, i'm just a worry wart. They ask what you do for your profession.... but why does that matter? mean, you can't work right away and you're sponsored?

I plan on working for my fiance's practice as his marketing liason.... but for the past year I have been working on and off....modeling and ....*gasp*.... exotic dancing.... I don't plan on continuing.... but I worry that they will think that it's a bad thing or something?

Anyways, kust paranoid I guess... I mean I am a very well educated person with a great work/career background... I just decided to spread my wings a little this past year lol! Actually it came about because I used to teach dance for years and I make my own hours... so I have all the time in the world to spend with family and visit my fiance in the US whenever I wanted (I had a horrible corporate career before that was stressing our relationship) plus I knew i'd be moving within the year so I quit.... I guess i'm trying to justify it.... but if it';s totally legal, then it shouldn't matter right?

Interview is very very basic!! They ask questions like:

How you met. What does your fiance do? Do you plan to work in the USA?, if so what? Very, very basic for the most part.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Try to think about it this way:

The officer at the consulate isn't there to judge your career choices and whether you have the requisite skills to attain a suitable/appropriate job in the USA. He is the there to make one last determination as to the validity of your relationship with the sponsor. He is the final check over the documents you submitted to meet all the immigration requirements.

I'd say just answer honestly when asked about what kind of work you do, and answer as if you'd answer anyone else that asks in your life. If you enjoy what you do and have pride in your work, then let that confidence show in your answer.

Like flames said, he asked how we met, spouse's current address, what kind of work he does, had I seen the house yet, what work I planned on doing, I think that was pretty much it.

The only info that they can truly verify, is the stuff you submitted, lol It is a very basic interview! You will wonder why you had to fork over $$$$ to pay for ur airfare and hotel for an interview that lasts only a few minutes! Now if he asks what you currently do in Canada, i would highly advise you don't say "want an demonstration" or maybe you should! Best of luck.

HAHAHA!!! No def no demo's!!!! :)

Thanks for the feedback guys...

We don't have concrete wedding plans yet, as we are marrying on the beach at the Jersey Shore.... but I will have a copy of my marriage license that we will try and obtain if it stays valid for 90 days or so. Also, we will not have an exact address of where we will be living, as we are in the process of finding a bigger house.... but all current info I know thoroughly.

Do they ever ask questions about your fiances family? Mind you, I hve met them all and know the info, just curious.... Do they look for proof of a big engagement? we agreed to get 'engaged' last May, and got a temp ring... then after we filed for our Visa, he proposed with my real ring...

I guess the whole Consulate thing is intimidating.

The $131 needs to be in cash? I will have to pay a fee for each myself and my son?

My experience of questioning went like this:

She kind of verified how we met and asked us what month we met online vs. what month we met in person. We actually met online in 1999 and in person in 2003, so she commented that WOW you guys have known eachother a long time! Then she asked us when we got engaged. We actually got engaged after we filed our paperwork, so we just told her that we decided we wanted to get married in June 2008, filed for the visa and then he officially proposed with a ring in Nov 2008. She then asked to see my ring and I showed her :)

Then she asked what I do for a living, and asked him what he does for a living. And asked if I would work in the same field and I plan to so that was that. Then she asked us if I would have medical insurance and how - he said he had it through his employer. She said she just wanted to verify that as I will lose my Canadian health benefits when I move.

She then just told us that everything looked in order and that it was approved.

Our interview took a total of 5 minutes.

Removing Conditions

SapphireDreams your interview sounds a lot like mine... I am thinking it was the same person.

Poprocks... they have no way of knowing that you dance, so if you are really uncomfortable with them knowing about it and you believe that you can answer the question confidently without including that info, then that should be no problem. I am thinking it wouldn't be a problem anyway though... as long as you didn't meet your guy through your job... that might cause further questioning :D

Honestly I think they are more interested in whatever you think of as your career occupation, rather than any random jobs that you happen to have at the moment, because they are evaluating what kind of person you will be in the US.

  • 7/7/08 -- I-129f sent
  • 7/9/08 -- I-129f received at CSC
  • 7/24/08 -- NOA1 (finally!)
  • 12/2/08 -- NOA2 (WOOT!!!!)
  • 12/8/08 -- received at NVC
  • 12/22/08 -- packet 3 (with packet 4 attachment instead of checklist :P)
  • 12/29/08 -- packet 3 sent back with bits and pieces that I pulled together to make up a packet 3
  • 1/5/09 -- actual packet 3 received, but found out by via e-mail that they were satisfied with what I had already provided
  • 2/10/09 -- found out via call to DoS that my interview is scheduled!
  • 3/16/09 -- interview!!!! APROVED!!!
  • 4/7/09 -- MOVE!!!!!!!!
Crossed at Detroit/Windsor Tunnel... pretty painless, about 45 minutes, inexperienced officer, asked for and received EA stamp

I think your answer might be better then the one i'll have. I'm 21 and I don't have a career... I'm graduating in June with my BA, and who the heck knows what i'm going to be doing after I get my EAD. Maybe I shouldn't phrase it like that? ahaha. My Fiance's family owns a business, so I figured I could just say I plan on working for them? It's not really the plan... more like the backup plan.

Weird about the health insurance thing! I'll have to get Bill to research that a little before the interview so we have a good answer if asked. Do they let the USC talk at all? Or should I talk for him?

Strange what you learn about people after a couple months talking over a message board. Poprocks? A model and exotic dancer? bow chica bow bow ;) (I'm so inappropriate sometimes, I apologize for that one) But don't even worry!! Like you said, its not like you're doing anything illegal and hey... exotic dancers make good money (from what I hear)

Don't try to justify it! Don't feel guilty for doing it! You are you and thats what makes you awesome.

I personally think its great that you do that! I've always secretly wanted to be a go-go dancer, but my body is now gone-gone

Donne moi une poptart!

I have been truthful in all my forms and have listed my current occupation... but the truth is, that I have not worked in 4 months, and I do not plan on going back until I move... I have enough of a nest egg.... does it look worse if your unemployed? LOL! and no I did not meet him through work lol! I used to be a Litigation Specialist for an Insr Co before... and quite about 3 months after we met.... I swear I could write a book about all this! lol!

I'm just gonna be honest, explain that I did it for a period of time and I plan on helping him with his business when I get down there

lol... I was immediately interested in your post because my baby and I go to strip clubs occasionally, where I tend to annoy the other guys there because I will often get in conversations with the dancers, keeping them from giving their attention to the drunk guys :D

Anyway if you've already mentioned it on forms then I guess it has to be mentioned in the interview. I really don't think it would be a big deal anyway.

At the time I completed the forms, not only was I scared to tell nothing but the truth (I thought that they are US Gov, they have the ability to find out anything!) but I also felt like if I didn't lost that, then I would look unemployed and that would be worse?

Well, I will say this, if I get a girl interviewer, I will totally downplay the experience....if I get a guy, I'll run with it! Haha! Oh gosh knowing my luck, I'll get a guy who swings the other way!!!!! Haha! I really need to stop obsessing over this and remind myself that it is 100% legal and I've only done it for a very short period of time. I just worry about the stigma that comes with it, and they will think that I abuse drugs of I am a potential 'prostitution' risk.....ahhhhhhh, yeah, NO THANK YOU! I've never had issues crossing and I've always been honest....LOL! My fiancé and I laugh that we are the 'Dr & the Dancer' LOL! Sounds funnier than the 'Dr & litigator' we used to be....

I heard it was raining in PA yesterday and it was sooooo sunny in Toronto, I'm looking outside today and it's pouring! Hate Canadian winters!!!!

Have a good Sunday :)

Ps, typed this on my iPhone, sorry in advance for typos
