This has definitely been a good learning thread.

I personally have no desire to get a credit card when I move. I'll probably just get one with my fiance for credit's sake so we can eventually get a mortgage or whatever... but I have no reason to get one otherwise when I get there since the debit card has a visa symbol on it and I can use that as a credit card online if I want to.

I've FINALLY almost paid off my Canadian card so I'm debt free when I move and refuse to ever owe credti card companies money ever again.

Just want to mention - you might want to get 2 credit cards - this has just been my experience - but - I was told by ING (mortgage) a couple of weeks ago that what they are looking for is '2 credit streams' - so if you think you will be shopping for a mortgage in the next few years it's probably a good idea :)

Ugh really? I don't even want to get 1! I hate them so much. R has 2 cards and has like phenomenal credit... Maybe I'll get one store card and then 1 credit card. You think that would be enough? I just can't be tempted to use cards, I am not very responsible and not afraid to admit it LOL

I used to work for a collection agency and we had a 3 day seminar at equifax in Toronto.

A soft enquiry does not hurt your credit. These are often done by companies who you already have accounts with who want to see if you qualify for a credit limit increase without your consent and just offer it to you. Just to see if you are OK with your other bills. If you ask for the increase, sometimes they will do a soft enquiry or a hard enquiry. Try to ask for a soft one to be done.

Hard enquires are when you apply for a loan, credit card, etc.

When I worked for CitiBank, my job was to actually perform soft pull enquiries to check to find ways to lower peoples credit limits that were at risk. And when we did that it never affected their credit ratings.

Oh just wanted to add... andyeah, it is true that multipe enquires do lower your score (at least in Canada, it lowers your FICO score). However, if you do it all within a short period of time (within a day) it just shows you as 'credit shopping' and for some reason it doesnt affect your score. At least thats what we were taught 7 years ago

Much better then my explanation - thanks for getting teh full info out!

Girl - you need credit in your own name . Someday, you may want to apply for a car loan in your own name, even a mortage in BOTH your names rather then just his. If you have no credit, it will hurt you both when trying to get a good rate.

I know that you aren't sticking your head in the sand on this credit thing (be nice to pay cash for everything)....but just think if 10 yrs from now, gawd forbid something happens to your husband and you're stuck in a position of having no credit living here

Ahhhh what a horrible thought! Let's try to be a bit more cheerful here maybe - this is credit after all

That's what we have Sapphire - an American Express and a store credit card.

^^ I know you are so right. I just really need to get over it and get some cards and teach myself not to spend what I don't have. I think I'll still wait until I have a job at least.... so I'm not tempted...

Yeah I think you need a job to apply for a CC anyway? Don't they ask you your income? I have a joint one now but am waiting to apply solo till I'm employed, I don't think they'd approve me otherwise.

You will soon find there is NO "United" in the States!! DMV's regulations differ from state to state. Lot of differences!!

State vs Federal. Perfectly normal. The states are under one Gov't., therefore United. But each state is its own entity as well. The Indians, however, see themselves as being in their own country here. Just go to one of their casinos and find out why. Cheers. :star:

#######? uh, thanks?

Sapphire- Getting a CC sucks if you don't want one. I didn't want one at all! I have 1 in my own name with a low limit, then I am on all three of jared's cards. He only ever uses the one card, though. When I went to apply for a mortgage, they would not give it to me until Jared put me on his CCs and I was on them for a few months. We had to wait a couple more months then we wanted to to actually look for a house.

I like having my card low limit, even though I know that doesn't really help you the best with getting credit. It does mean though that I can't spend spend more money than I make because the limit is low!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

If you dont want one, why would you get one? IDMS.

If you are going to post this drivel, at least mention that you haven't read the thread - that way you are acknowledging that you have no idea what we are talking about

thanks

I have no job but Penneys gave me one anyway.

I know that no one needs any advice on how to keep ye olde credit cards under control - however, I have found that paying them all the time is the best - and the most painful way lol

With online activity now, I check my credit card at least once a week and pay it - all.

Do you think I can apply for a Target card when I go visit him during my next visit, even though I havent even applied for my visa yet? Would I have to put my address (canadian) or his?

I wont even be applying for the visa for another 10 months (once we get married), but Id love to have established US credit by the time I get down.

You use all your Canadian info and credit history (this is what Target credit told me on the phone), you do it in store, if they have issues in setting up Canadian info, they can call their tech line...you need SIN, passport and /or DL.... they will first consider you for a Target Visa card.... if you get approved, then you have a fully functioning Visa.... if you do not qualify for that one, then they consider you for their regular in sore Target card.

Make sense?

i'm gonna try for the Target Visa when I go back... is Macy's considered a good credit source for building credit history? as well, if my fiance adds me to his cards, does that help at all?

When I went to Target, they did not care to ask about income or anything about a job....hmmm wonder if it was another mistake on their part, or it doesn't matter? I guess i'll find out next time I go... I am hoping to apply for about 2-3 cards all in a couple of days...but maybe I should wait until I clear up my car loan thing... i'm trying to get my loan transferred to the US.... if that works, then no cards for me.... or maybe just one... does paying a US loan count for credit?
