Tesco in the USA

Saw this on one of the sites I go to.

Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen, who, after leaving the Royal Flying Corps, setup a market stall in the East End of London selling groceries from 1919. His first day's profit was one pound.

The Tesco brand itself was first seen in 1924. The name derived after Cohen bought a large shipment of tea from T.E. Stockwell and made new labels by using the first three letters of the supplier's name and the first two letters of his surname forming the word "TESCO", so the capitalised version is probably more correct.

There is a wide mis-conception that the name is an abbreviation of the name of Jack Cohen's wife, Tessa Cohen, becoming TESCO - however this is wrong as Jack was never married to a Tessa.

As of early 2006 Tesco was the fourth largest retailer in the world behind Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Home Depot. Turnover for the year to Feb 2006 was 38.3 billion pounds, giving a pre-tax profit of 2.2 billion.

In February 2006 Tesco announced plans to move into the United States by opening a chain of convenience stores, starting on the West Coast in 2007. CEO Terry Leahy stated, "We have committed serious resources to developing a format that we believe will be really popular with American consumers".

In May 2006 the Los Angeles times reported that Tesco had purchased a 1.4-million-square-foot distribution center in Riverside County, near Los Angeles and planned to acquire another in Phoenix Arizona. The U.S. chain will be called Tesco Fresh & Easy. The stores are expected to be around 15,000 square feet - good sized supermarkets in many countries, but small convenience stores in a U.S. context.

tesco's was the only place where I was able to find streaky bacon!

Unfortunately, no ....it's something to do with a health law. They can't ship any pasturised dairy products over here, hence the lack of decent cream. That stuff in a glass jar is shite.

That stuff was sooooo good! And not fattening at all either. Man I miss that stuff!

My father in law is working on that project. He works for an architects firm that is producing the designs for the new stores in Socal.
