HSV can cause infant death?

Well, in Cambodia people who have HSV and kiss their child the child did not die. Why?

In this case, the coroner probably cannot make a proper diagnosis so he assumed it was caused by HSV. Weird. He may be right, but it's a small probability.

HSV isn't going to kill everyone! The mom contracted the virus shortly before delivery and therefor had no antibodies to the virus to pass on to her child. This is when most babies of infected moms get sick (from recently infected moms). Most everyone has HSV type 1 at least but we also are protected by our mother's antibodies. I'm guessing this was probably HSV type 2, which tends to be much more serious and fairly commonly leaves infants with complications. Death is obviously very rare but HSV can get up into the brain and kill. I'm guessing this is a constellation of reasons that collided to end in the kid's death. I highly doubt the coroner just put HSV down for the fun of it considering the highly publisized nature of the death.
