But some estimate the size of our universe to be around 156 billion light years wide which requires more explaining for the big bang forming the universe some odd 13 billion years ago. But again the laws of physics as we understand them today, didn't exist until the universe was formed, or partially formed, or whatever.

It is not so much competition, but rather completeness and, I use the term loosely, simplicity. Any model works, as long as it accounts for what we observe.

Newton's physics can explain nearly anything you might encounter in the physical world. Quantum mechanics explains many of the electronic gadgets we take for granted today. String theory has some elogance that appeals to Mathematicians, and probably nobody else. So that debate will continue. We are still looking for that Unified Field Theory, one simple equation that would explain all of creation.

Some self-proclaimed shamans, I have encountered, say they already know that answer. Who am I to tell them they are wrong? Especially when they are flying high on psychedelics!
