Last summer while I was waiting for my green card I started fishing in the Kentucky sun in the summer got a really good sun tan out of it.

I became a house husband and watched tv and stuff (boring stuff)

So far I've done several things:

- Completed a few games. ;) I finally have access to a 360 and the backlog of games that comes with it (I'm not very good at them, though, so by 'few' I really only mean 'two').

- Study! I'm learning accounting.

- Long walks. I also sometimes walk a friend's dog.

- Babysitting for my landlady.

- Fortnightly D&D roleplaying session with a group of people down in Santa Cruz.

- Odd 'jobs' here and there; for example one day I cleaned out my MIL's kitchen cupboards.

- Rearranging the apartment - last week we spent four days at IKEA and then assembling furniture and unpacking boxes.

- Catching up on TV shows.

Overall I've been kept quite busy with things here and there - I've spent far, far fewer hours in front of the TV/computer than I thought. Certainly far fewer than when I was in the UK!

So far Nick has--

Cleaned out the garage and reorganized it.

Put in new wiring to add plugs and a shop light at the back.

Built a workbench.

Organized his tools he brought and shopped pawn shops for cheap power tools he left behind.

Painted the inside of his closet and installed a new clothes bar and light.

Cleared out another closet of junk.

Fixed my lunch everyday.

Hacked my dvd player to play his UK dvds.

Rebuilt his computer. Worked on friends and family computers and wireless.

Taken out the trash every Mon and Thur. and done most of the grocery shopping.

Passed his driving test and got a Texas license.

Installed a surround sound system.

Took really good care of my old kitty and then buried her. :crying:

Took his car apart to re-wire the subwoofer and amp.

Fixed the window shutters.

Read a lot of books.

Most of those probably don't sound like fun things to you. hahahaha

He is awesome and I do adore him for being so helpful. (L)

I will probably be decorating the new house, working in the garden (if it isn't too hot), start up my crafting again and maybe do some volunteering. There's also a couple of newcomers clubs and an NCO spouses club on base I might join so I can meet new people.

The biggest thing I wanna do is learn to drive. I'm 28 and don't even drive in the UK. I tried it last time I was in Alabama and loved every second! I can't wait to start driving over there. Then I can be a much more useful hubby!

Oh - and networking! If you plan to work as soon as you have your EAD, this can be really valuable.

It's certainly hard to know where to start, though. Fortunately I have a wonderful mother-in-law who, as a preschool teacher, gets to talk to a lot of parents, quite a few of whom are recruiters/looking to hire in the future. Alex and I are both pretty shy, but we've still forced ourselves to attend parties and gatherings, as making connections is always valuable.

I'm planning to finish off my Thesis (OK, I haven't even started it yet mainly because I don't want to ship all the paperwork, copies of articles and associated rubbish with me - I'll start from when I get there). Since I'll have so much time on my hands, I should be able to be done with it well before the submission date next January :). Now all I have to do is get to the States and find all that free time... ;)

I can't drive but I did read the Kentucky Drivers guide while I was waiting. Its a perfect time to chill and get used to a new life. When I started work I realised I was in the real world now the thought of being here on vacation was over. Its the small things that matter. I enjoyed cooking for my wife and used to make sure she had dinne ready for when she got home from work. If I had just moved to the UK from here and was waiting for all the paperwork I know I would of found it easier other there as I really miss public transport. I could hop onto a bus or train and go anywhere. Here it was kind of isolating. I really miss walking to my local co-op back in England.
