Basically, Pakistan was initially established on "two nation theory", which its promulgator Jinnah failed to recogninse needed as being based on the absurd "one nation Islam", which implies the (observably false) opposite. A partial attempt to support that ideology was the "one-unit" (which combined West Pakistan's four provinces into one--though "monolith Islam" was actually secondary in this, the primary aim being to "balance" the majority-wing East Pakistan which was near-monolithic***).

So basically:

• the country has never come to terms with the fallacy of its base-foundational argument
• also, in 1950's, it decided on a policy of "hate India" rather than the idea put forth by some leaders (such as Suhrawardy, Mujib, Tajuddin, Maulana Bhashani, ...--all except for Suhrawardy oft imprisoned, with Suhrawardy suspected of being "blunt trauma" murdered in Beirut) of "love and develop Pakistan, the nation which we've now gotten"

***The little fact that 98% of Banglas are Bengalis (89% Muslim, 8.5% Hindu, 0.5% other) had more to do with that than any religious issues.

Two developments:

• Zardari says open-end truce agreed in Swat (Translation: Zardari surrenders Swat to Taliban rule, paving way for rest of contested-NWFP--which means all NWFP execpt for Haripur and Abbotabad Districts)
• Gates states in Krakow that 0bama would accept Swat-style agreement (see above) for Afghan peace (Translation: Hamid, you'd better be prepared to do final fight, 0bama has abandoned you entirely
