You nailed it They just hate us period.

The Iranian government does but not so with the people. I've seen repeated stories about how Americans are actually more popular there than in many of our "allied" countries. We did destroy their enemies in Iraq and Afghanistan but the Iranians don't want to get encircled by U.S. allies that can serve as stepping steps to invasion. The Iranians also see themselves as a great power in the past, as sort of defender of the faith in Islam and having the oil money, revolutionary doctrine and tech know how to influence the region.

This isn't a defense of the Iranian government but considering they are at odds with us in Iraq, there hasn't been good coverage in general of what's happening there in the last 30 years in the U.S. media.
