Hello fellow VJ Canadians!

I was wondering if anyone knows an AFFORDABLE translator in Montreal (Français to English)?? I was to get a head start in translating my documents. Also, I wanted to know if i need to have my carnet de vaccination translated for the medical exam or if there's some sort of universal language when it comes to shots?

Hi ruby_mtl

I used the OTTIAQ and did a search on their websites for my translations. They are pretty much all in the same prices (approximately 0.25$ per word). The only thing is they won't have your documents notarized, they can have them certified (as most of them can do that being certified translators) but not notarized which is not the same thing at all, so you will need to get your documents notarized by your notary.

for your health records book, I do not think it needs to be translated as the only certified doctor in Montreal area does speak french very well.

For what it's worth, if the documents originated in Canada and your interview is in Canada, you don't have to have the documents translated. I was worried about it and I called the NVC and they told me that I didn't have to get my husband's birth certificate translated from French to English since he is from Canada. I don't know if that helps or not.

Was going to ask the same question cause last time I checked, they said every documents not in English have to be translated by a certified translator and notarized.

Surprisingly! (because normally information regarding U.S. immigration is so clear ) - there is conflicting information on this on the National Visa Center site.

I've seen people answer this question both ways - and I guess really both answers are correct! So really it's up to you.

If you look at the Montreal specific instructions - posted at - it says this:

Note on translations. All documents not in English must be accompanied by certified translations into English. Translations must be certified by a competent translator and sworn to by him before a Notary.

However if you look at the NVC site, with instructions for the applicant - it states this:

Translation Requirements

All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations.

The translation must include a statement signed by the translator that states that the:

Translation is accurate, and

Translator is competent to translate.

yes... I called the NVC and they told me that. I have my case complete at the NVC and am just waiting on an interview. Well, I guess Trailmix has a better answer.

I was thinking since the embassy's in montreal they might as well SPEAK french, but since this pertains to the US government they might require that it be in english. Up to you, i had mine translated and they took a copy of the original in french and of the translation for their files.

AMEN!!!! you know what's funny? I'm Francophone and I wanted both my daugthers' birth certificates in English so my SO could read it and plus moving to the US I just figured it would be easier. It was soooooo complicated!!! But I finally got both in English. I argued with one of the people exactly that...Canada is a bilingual country and both languages are official languages....her reply: "Well this is Quebec Madame and we do things in French!"

So stupid....---> that comming from a Frenchie! LOLOLOL
