Can someone tell me which is easier? Going ahead and getting married and getting the visa that goes along with this or waiting on a K-1 visa?

What country are you getting married in? I would advise getting a proper visa before you get married to avoid problems later. I know someone who's fiance entered the US as a tourist, and then they got married at a courthouse a few days later without a K1. It has caused them a few headaches. I would wait and do it by the book, but maybe others have different opinions?

By the way...I like the story of how you met. You never know where and when it'll happen!

We did the K-1 because the processing time was much shorter at that time than was the K-3

It depends partly on which province Dan lives in and whether you want to get married in the US or Canada. Also, if you check here on VJ at the different steps in each of the processes, as well as the timeline for your service centre, that will help you decide which method is faster.

My k-1 took 5 months, but if we'd gotten married and then filed, it would have taken longer but I could have arrived here and then worked right away, which is much easier for the long-run stress.

depends what you mean by easier

CR (married) visa takes longer but you can work right away. Once entered you don't have to worry about removing conditions for almost 2 years. We got married in US. I read somewhere that it was easier with USCIS...don't know if it's true.

K1 and K3 is quicker but you can't work and have time restrictions on the follow-up AOS stuff. You also have to prepare all that 'proof of relationship' stuff.

My CR took almost a year, Nov. 04 to Oct. 05. Seems to me the wait times are longer now though. Permanent Residence and SSN arrived within a month.
