With msn messenger you save the chat log, which shows that webcam/voice was activated. You can save the logs out every session or you can let them accumulate over time. Yahoo also has a preference where you can save the chat logs also.

hey there

I am also preparing for my interview now and was wondering how exactly can you see on messenger when the web camera was activated, cause we are using messenger too.... saving all our conversations, but dont really see this feature

If you have conversation saved on msn messenger, the XML chat log files will be under the following directory:

"C:\My Documents\My Received Files\[user_name]\History"

There will be .xml file with your username, this is the conversation log and is appended to after each conversation, it shows when voice was activated and when web cam was started. What I did because I wanted to keep our conversations private I modified the 'MessageLog.xsl' file to print out Private under the conversation data and then I double clicked the xml file, and it opens in internet explorer and then I printed it as a PDF file using PrimoPDF (free pdf printer).

My log looks like this:

Date Time From To Message

8/13/2008 2:39:58 AM vassana wild_star@hotmail.com Private

8/13/2008 2:40:13 AM wild_star@hotmail.com vassana Private

8/13/2008 2:40:39 AM vassana wild_star@hotmail.com Private

8/13/2008 2:40:44 AM vassana is inviting you to start viewing webcam. Do you want to Accept (Alt+C) or Decline (Alt+D) the invitation?

8/13/2008 2:40:47 AM You have accepted the invitation to start viewing webcam.

8/13/2008 2:40:52 AM You have invited vassana to start viewing webcam. Please wait for a response or Cancel (Alt+Q) the pending invitation.

8/13/2008 2:40:54 AM wild_star@hotmail.com vassana Private

8/13/2008 2:41:06 AM vassana has accepted your invitation to start viewing webcam.

8/13/2008 2:41:09 AM wild_star@hotmail.com vassana Private

8/13/2008 2:41:20 AM wild_star@hotmail.com vassana Private

If you email me I can send you my messageLog.Xsl that I modified to make it show private in the message field for just your conversation.

I don't mean to rain on this thread's parade, but a couple points:

  • Things like chat logs are VERY weak forms of evidence. They could be easily fabricated, altered, copied, etc. Thus, the embassy might not trust a printed out novelette of romantic chat. (especially if it's accompanied with "teadrinker08 is me, and muffintopsweeti84 is her")
  • I don't suspect they are interested in reading the intimate details of your steamy online romance. If they were to read it, it's more likely to be for their own amusement than to solidify your case.
  • They are much more interested in primary evidence, especially forms of evidence that is verifiable and is strongly linked to your identity (ie - boarding passes with your real name, rather than a screen name)

Having as much evidence as possible for the interview may be a good idea, but you shouldn't count on Skype logs to be your saving grace. I highly suggest focusing your efforts on better forms of evidence, and preparing yourself mentally.

To be honest all forms of evidence can be fabricated fairly easily, including boarding passes etc. I think the point of it, is the more forms of communication the better. I don't think any one form of communication is weaker then the other and to say so is bad advice. The best advice is to have a nice cross section of evidence showing a bonafide relationship.

I agree that more is better, and I agree that you should take whatever evidence you have.... But some evidence is definitely worth more than others, and I think people preparing for interviews should realize that and adjust accordingly.

For instance.... Sure, you can fabricate a boarding pass, but government agencies have easy access to airline travel databases and could (in theory) verify it if there was any suspicion of validity. Plus, if the records don't match your claims, it'd be a really easy felony prosecution. Thus, there's much greater risk involved with forgery of a boarding pass than a chat log, so it's more likely to be taken seriously.
