I generally trust Pushbrk's comments, but I will say that I did read a post from someone who got turned away by customs at the US office, had to go back to country of origin (paying for a round trip ticket) because of an opened package. Not to make you worried, but you should try to bring it back and get a sealed one.

Good luck!

Well, that would be news to me but that's why we have "news". What I'm saying is when there isn't time, to get the package resealed, there's no reason to cancel travel plans based on the small risk you'll get turned around. If there IS time, even if inconvenient, I'd get back to the Consulate and get it resealed.

Hmm I wouldnt call it a small risk of being turned back - I am pretty sure when it happened on the two occassions mentioned they found it hugely inconvenient not to mention costly. It would seem it is better to get it resealed before embarking on the journey to the US even if it means changing travel plans.

For those querying which envelope - as I recall I received the Do Not Open envelope when my passport (stamped with visa) was delivered by courier - I was given my xrays back at the time of the interview.

Experiences vary. Although I'm certainly recommending getting the envelope resealed at the Conslate, I've been around the forums for three years and have heard only of the two instances mentioned here. I've also had several conversations with a CBP station chief about this, during which he assured me this is a frequent occurance. Our first contact was the result of a CBP officer not even taking my wife's envelope. Of course, I knew anything she managed to get a thousand mile from the POE was certainly ok to open so I opened it without paying attention to what as on the outside. Had to make an infopass appointment 150 miles from home to take the file back to USCIS. Then since there is no such date as August 39, I mailed two passports to the CBE station chief to correct the I-94's and passport entry stamps. We've had a total of 4 conversations, I think, about how CBP looks at the subject of maintaining permanent resident status, that has us seriously considering Citizenship for my wife when the time comes.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

I'm also a bit curious about this envelope.

Does it say "do not open" on the envelope? Is this sent to the fiance after the I-129 is approved? I want to make sure this doesn't happen to us.

Thanks.

Yes, the envelope is marked do not open, but sometimes it doesn't come out too clearly, sometimes SO's are nosey and sometimes they just don't pay attention. Knowing my husband, the first thing I did when I found out about the envelope is told him not to open it (5 months before we got it :) ). You get the envelope when they deliver your visa from the embassy. You present it at immigration in the US. It contains all the info about your case.
