"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Yesterdays purchase was "The Primary Chronicle" in Slavonic, Russian, and English translations :-)

I primarily research Ancient/Mideval and Soviet Eras, but have a wide breadth of passing interests. I am working a captsone paper now on the Sov-Afhgan war which is proving very interesting. I have another article on the Chechen conflicts as well I am in progress on ...

I have heard of that book a few times now. I beleive it gives the history of the Kyev Rus if I'm correct.

btw, when I was in Belarus last, I took the offer to visit Polotsk. That city should be in your book if not by that name. It was one of the original "big 3"....that being Kyev, Novgorod, and Polotsk.

I envy you that purchase. :)

K1, would you mind sharing your works on Sov/Af and Rus/Chech?

I was knee-deep in online studies before the "global war on terror" shut down most of the unbiased websites. Now, I simply can't accept the "fair and balanced" news we see from around the world. I went so far as to order a few books with "Jihad" in the title before running out of resources. After I stopped working for Uncle Sam I realized ordering books about mujahideen wasn't such a good idea since we no longer observe the 4th Amendment. Hopefully sometime in the near future we'll be able to exercise our 1st Amendment Rights again too.

Anyway.... putting the tin-foil hat back in it's case.

If you'd be willing to share I'll PM you with an E-mail address.

So now you are on the same government list as the rest of us subversives - welcome to the club. I want to add my voice to Slim's here, asking for access to your article on the Chechen conflict, and any research that is an easy read. My Russian is pretty poor though, so English language stuff only for me please.

sure guys .. BUT Sof/Afhgan paper is a couple months from being done its rather large.

Chechen paper I should have finished in the next month or so .. This particular article stresses the UN fears of interference with Russia and their basic impotence when it comes to Russian except during the Tajikistan and Georgia when Russia was at its weakness. I will warn that I come from a military acedamey education so do not expect any sympathies for chechens of afghans ;-)

While i back all fats up i have been accused of being a tad nationalistic towards Russia in the past. hehe But I have no prob sharing I will let you all know when these are done.

Alot of interesting stuff in regards to Chechnya....US backed Mujadheen, Russians and Chechnyan's torchering Chechnyan's, and now you have journalist in Russia being killed off like fly's and the Kremlin is always pointing the finger at Chechnyan mafia...how convienent for Putin. Let's not forget that a significant number of Chechnyan dissendents living outside Chechnya...all enemy's of Kadrov.

What alot of Americans don't realize is that the real trouble in regards to Russia is ...Ukraine. If Russia gets it's way in regards to a pro Kremlin government in Ukraine, it could lead to further Russifcation of Ukraine later on. Putin has made threats in regards to the Crim, and Belarus has lost their language all together due to Russfication. :(

That is true - educated Belarussians speak Russian, even at home. There is also a tendency to try and find ways to characterize yourself as "ethnic Russian" there, through ancestry, etc. My ex-partners there all spoke fluent Russian, and preferred it over their native tongue. Some of the younger ones can't even speak Belarussian fluently, although they understand it fine.

Good thing we don't have anything like that here! It would really suck if our government could do whatever they wanted and then blame it on someone else.

Not sure if that was sarcasm or not...our government has done alot of crappy things ...Iraq war, Vietnam...the list goes on and on and on. But after living in Russia...I worked there at Sakhalin Island, I got a good look into the Russian mindset.

Journalist who are critical of Putin are being picked off like fly's ...murdered. Chechnyan dissendents living abroad are getting mowed down at an alrarming rate...and if anyone here thinks last years presidential elections in Russia were actually fair and democratic...then they haven't a clue.

Ukraine is the key right now. If the pro western Ukrianian government can hold out...or atleast hold a majority of the seats, then Ukraine has a chance. If not, and the pro Kremlin party in Ukriane wins the next elections, Ukraine will most likely go the way of Belarus....and it doesn't get any worse in Europe than Belarus. Belarus is run by a dictator who can't even speak his own country's langauge due to his Russification in school, politics, and work. Belarus is the last hold out in Europe when it comes to communism, and those people have little freedom left if any. It's a ####### government that runs Belarus.

Those of us who know Slim a little are betting money on sarcasm. Most USCs here probably agree with your comments on Ukraine and Belarus, if they follow the issues. I will warn you though that there are a fair number of rabid Putinists who watch this forum, and negative commentary about the Russian government will draw three types of fire: 1) You aren't one of us, and cannot understand, 2) You haven't done enough research, and the ever popular 3) What is strongest is rightest  and criticism will not be tolerated. See any thread dealing with the Georgian conflict - several posters refused to acknowledge that Ossetia is even within the sovereign borders of Georgia. There may even be sparks from this humble post. You are warned!

LOL...I'm used to it. I post alot on topix.com in the Belarusian, Ukraine, and Russia forums...and I guess I'm a Russophobe for the most part. I get a laugh from the Russophile's though...they crack me up. "strength of Russia 's military > indoor plumbing" is always their motto. They always manage to point out that Stalin is Georgian...even though Russians voted him the third greatest Russian of all time...and he would have been voted #1 if the media hadn't begged Russians not to vote for him when he was running #1 in the polls...for 3 months straight I might add. Stalin...the killer of over 20,000,000 people.

Here's a good link down below that pretty much sums up the current government in Russia. It's a short one page article.

Interesting commentary on a political/social philosophy that often confounds us in the West. The thought that success and stability only come through the leadership of the very strongest elitists (I think we get that bit) and any sort of action against the population is excusable if it is done in the name of creating or maintaining a strong nation. I think we stop short (usually) of direct control of media, text books, etc to convey "official" state ideology.
