So I moved the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA November 22nd. Port of Entry in Buffalo was easy breezy and they welcomed me in the country smoothly. We got married Saturday December 13, 2008 and it was boo-ti-ful! We had a really wonderful time, and it was great to see family and friends come from all over. We couldn't have done it without your help and support!!

Now, we are in the process of applying for my adjustment of status. Can anyone help me with the following:

Where do I get a social security number? We live in the Bay Area, CA. What does a ssn entitle me to?

We will be filling out the forms as carefully as possible and following the guidelines here on VJ and in the instructions, however, does anyone know how long it will be until I can work and leave the country? We have not taken a honeymoon yet because we'd like to leave the country when I can.

Any suggestions are definitely welcomed....thank you in advance. Be safe!! :)

Read theinstructions on the I-485 and check the GUIDES at the top here on VJ.

Go to your local Social Security Agency office to get your SS card. Ypu need your MC to apply for AOS.

You have to have a SSN in the US. It's a unique number that you will have for the rest of your life, that makes you a person in the eyes of just about everything. Without a SSN, you can't work, file taxes, get a library card, drive, open a bank account... it's not so much what it "entitles you to" but what you can't do without it!

From filing the AOS it's about 3 months for your EAD (employment authorisation document) and AP (which you need to leave the country). Apart from that, it's anyone's guess for your GC but I think on average about 6 months?

Timeline Summary:

K-1/K-2 NOA1 - POE: 9 February - 9 July 2010

Married: 17 July 2010

AOS mailed - Interview : 22 November 2010 - 10 March 2011

ROC mailed - approved: 14 February - 18 June 2013

Citizenship mailed - ceremony: 9 February - 7 June 2017
