New US-Ireland pre-clearance agreement

Shannon Airport has become the first European airport with fast-track pre-clearance for transatlantic flights to the US. The Irish and US Governments have joined forces to allow passengers from the airport to pass through immigration, customs and agriculture inspections before taking off.

The pre-clearance agreement, to be formally signed by Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey and US Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff in Washington on Monday, is the first of its kind outside Canada and the Caribbean.

Opening in Shannon next summer and in Dublin the following year, it paves the way for Ireland to become an international aviation gateway for European travellers heading to the US...

Eeeps...........

I know!.. :bonk:

Well, God only knows there are enough murals of American Presidents hanging about already on the sides of buildings..........

That all we need.. now that we finally stopped (for the most part) fighting with each other and the brits.. we'll all end up turning into a "blue state"

What if Ireland really was the 51st state?

Irish people may talk like Democrats but the evidence suggests they act like Republicans, writes Steve Coronella

FOR A displaced American such as myself, living in Ireland during a US election can be an edifying experience.

Since the Democrats and Republicans endorsed their respective candidates a few weeks back, Irish commentators have gone to town in the analysis department.

Whether the forum is the opinion page of the major dailies or the soundproofed confines of a broadcast studio, they've been pontificating long and hard on what a John McCain or Barack Obama presidency will mean for the US and the rest of the world. (Answer: either more of the same or something hopefully different.)

The tone of such discussions can vary, from smug and dismissive to affable and insightful.

But beneath all the speculation and scrutiny surrounding our imminent presidential showdown there's an interesting subtext...

Yay for Ireland! I know flying out of Dublin and being able to go through pre-clearance for immigration was great....this would be fantastic to be able to go through the whole shebang...immigration and customs. I remember how nice it was to get off the plane and get whisked past the hundreds of people waiting in immigration lines...hehehe.

I was just thinking the same thing the next year or two it'd be nice to go though it all back home before coming home!.. It'd be nice to get the airport in the US and be ejected out of the secured area and be free to go where you need to go. I wonder how much extra business Dublin and Shannon will pickup now after this.

Only thing new in it is that they now do customs (it was immigration only that was cleared earlier, you still had to do customs in US) just like the 9 Canuck PFI's.

Excellent for those who wish to shop in UK

True, but still nice to get it all out of the way for the long trip over. It'd be nice to, to be able to pass all the big lines on the other side. I'm sure it'd be useful as well for those not 100% sure if they'll be allowed in for one reason or another. Better to be told no in Ireland than in somewhere in the US.

That was already the case earlier when only immigration (not customs) was cleared at the Dublin and Shannon PFI's.

No question, it's also nicer to have the customs issues over-with.
