One last dumb question

I'm heading over to the Social Security office this afternoon to have my status updated to Citizen along with my son's status.

Just wondered if my son had to be present to have his done or can I just take his U.S. passport along and have it updated? He is 17 1/2 years old. He's grumbling about having to go...lol.

No such thing as last dumb question. There are bound to be more! :P

I would take him just to be sure. As far as I know, being a minor, I would think not. My social security card was obtained by my parents when I was a kid. But it is always better safe than sorry.

This may be answer your questions.

Until he/she becomes 18 years old, he/she can not sign SSN card, and you should be there for his/her SSN card replacement.

For specific question, it doesn't sound that your kid's presence is required, but I agree that it is better bring him/her to SSA office to do his/her replacement request since it is his/her card.

It may not be required by SSA procedure, but it is his/her card.

So do his/her due dilligence as a part of education. ^^

Sometimes parents' word is beyond the law if you are living with them and under their support.

Ok here is my update.

Son came home from school and complained he wasn't feeling well. Ok sounds suspicious.

I decide to take the chance and just went on my own. The woman I dealt with was really nice. I informed her that I wanted to update the status of me and my son in their system to show us as Citizens and to get that certain line removed from the social security cards. I presented both my U.S. passport and my son's. At first the woman asked if I had my Naturalization Certificate and I said, "Oh no. I thought my U.S. passport would have sufficed as evidence of citizenship. She said she would put all the information into the system and see if it would accept without the Certificate. My son did not need to be present. She looked up our previous information from back in 2002, asked me a few security questions like my mother's last name, first name, where I was born, my birthdate where my son was born, etc. She then asked for my driver's licence. After typing in some information intot he computer, she took our old SS cards, said they would be destroyed and our new cards would arrive in about 10 days. Phew!

I try to be nice, but sometimes they make it difficult, and make comments like, where did you read that, or wait a minute, not coming here to get money, but you are taking 15% of my wife's gross wages that she will probably never get back. Sets a different tune with some of these overpaid under brained government workers that get veterans day off. But they never took her old card, wouldn't let them, said, she may need that for some reason until the new card comes. They told me ten days, took more like a month and in finally came in a couple of days ago. Checked it, and it was correct. Wife was using her maiden name before her married name and decided she didn't want that anymore, so we got that removed.

At first she was concerned about using her maiden name for Venezuela to keep ties with her home country, but we got our marriage registered and with her latest passport, just using her married name, so we she switched just to her married name on her certificate of naturalization, US passport, and now her SS card. Also is confusing using Smith-Jones with the computer systems, besides, she likes her married name better, so do I, but kept quiet on this subject.
