There was never any question about whether I would become a U.S. citizen. I couldn't find any reason NOT to become a U.S. citizen.

There are many benefits to being a U.S. citizen, such as you never have to worry about being out of the U.S. for any length of time anymore, you can get government jobs that require U.S. citizenship and you can vote.

There are also other benefits if your U.S. citizen spouse dies (as far as inheritance, etc.).

I am a proud Canadian (and always will be) and now I'm a proud American too!!!!!

That is something that would make me consider citizenship actually...

Yes, will have dual. Actually had my USa citizenship test/interview a few weeks back and passed, BUT their was an 'extra" fiel on my case, and they had to get the file and see what it is, before I can do the oath ceremony. At the Fairfax VA office,they do the interview/oath the very same day! So I'm in a holding pattern until they see what that extra file is. i have u hunch its the k3 the lagged WAY behind my cr-1! I'm in no hurry at all, so not a problem. Some people are forced to go the USA citizenship, due to their spouses employment. As well no more dealing with USA immigration,lol Which in reality isn't that bad, I wasn't one to sit and check my case to see if it had touches, things happen when they happen,lol Maybe my attitude would be different if it took years to complete.

If you plan to get a federal job many (not all) require you to be a USA citizen. And if you plan to goto school and want to get scholarships many state as part of the criteria,you have to be a USA citizen. Their are many + and - of each. I may be a USA citizen, but for me, its only a "paper" thing, I will ALWAYS be a Canadian and will ALWAYS refer to myself as Canadian, not dual, not American, but Canadian!

I agree! It doesn't matter where we are and what we do....we all need to know and remember where we come from!

Why wouldn't I become one. And actually I've never of anyone denouncing their Canadian citizenship yet. I know you can, but haven't found or heard anyone actually going through the process and not even sure why you would. 2 is better then 1. I'm a citizen of North America, I can live and work where I want and when I want without having to renew any forms or renew documents or risk abandoning things like the Green Card if I moved away.

I haven't seen any good reason not to apply to get both as there are definate benefits and no negatives as far as I can see (well other then jury duty), ok 1 negative...

I don't know what would be the point either...and that is true of any citizenship. I think that we are lucky that both the US and Canada recognaize dual citizenship.

Hi guys and gals!

Someone had mentioned spouse's employment as being a factor for becoming a USC. I am wondering if this applies to me. My spouse will be is active duty military. There were lots of jobs on the base is he presently at the REQUIRED US citizenship. Do you think the military would require me to become a USC? or just a suggestion? If he ever gets stationed overseas and I am a PR not a USC would that present a problem? (As a side note he is transferring bases soon and will be required to go under review for a TS clearance, me being a non citizen, will that constitute extra review time, he tells me no)

Thanks in advance!

I'm guessing that you would have to be a USC to be in the military. I know that here in Canada, if you want to be in the army, you have to be a citizen. I also think they can help with the citizenship process, dunno if it's the same in the US. You should look into it.

This is correct, you do not need to be a USC to join many of the military branches at all. In fact you can get quite high ranks as a non-US citizen. There are many over in Iraq right now that are not USC's. You can even get some of the security clearence jobs as well without being a citizen. The top secret ones you would need to be, but not the basic clearences at all (or wasn't when I was offered a position a few years ago)...

You know...before I moved here I was all..."Okay, this is how it's going to go down, I move there, we get married, wait wait wait then apply for citizenship" but that seems so far away.

Nick and I have been talking so much about moving back to Canada so...who knows what our future will hold.

Most of me still plans on getting dual just so we don't have to go through this again in case we do move back to Canada and then when we are 60 and want to move back to the U.S. I can just come, ya know?

We'll see but right now, yeah, I'll probably go for dual.

Let's Keep the Song Going!!!

Every time I talk to my husband about Canada he gets really mad at me. Even though he told me he wanted to move back eventually, I don't think that's what he wants to do now.

So I guess I'll become a citizen. For my own security.

Dual Citizenship all the way! I don't see why you wouldn't if you can. At least that way you expand your opportunities and not have as many hassles (I hope).

For me, being an IT Consultant, being a USC would expand my job opportunities. There are a lot of US companies that have divisions that are involved in government or military contracts. These companies have stipulations that does not allow non-USC to work for them due to the nature of their business with the government, even if I would not be working for that business unit. A good example is Raytheon. They have many government and military contracts, but they also do consulting work to the private sector (regular businesses). I was interviewed for this one job opportunity with Raytheon in the past and they were going to hire me, but once they asked if I was a USC, they told me they were unable to hire me, even though the client that I would be working at was non-gov't related. At the time it sucked because I was going through somewhat of a dry spell in jobs.

So if given the opportunity to be a USC I recommend it as it's the only way to truly unlock that door to the land of opportunity.

nope, most likely will not apply for citizenship. I just can't picture myself choking out the oath :P

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen;

that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic;

that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;

that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law;

that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law;

that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and

that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.

I do not plan on joining the military myself, my spouse is/would be active duty. The only thing that concerns me is me being a non citizen spouse and having possible issues when it comes to possible overseas change of station? or because of his TS clearance reviews. Anyone have anysight to this?

I won't become a US citizen, as I could never "absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen"....I love the U.S., would love to be able to vote here and my husband would love for me to become a citizen, but I will always, always have allegiance and fidelity to Canada. I couldn't make the above required statement in good conscience.

It is sad that Canadians have to renounce Canada to have dual citizenship, but Canada doesn't require American citizens to renounce the U.S. to be dual citizens.

PR will have to be sufficient for me.

I swore on a bible at my interview and I don't believe in god. I will sit there and pray along with people at thanksgiving too, I am sure I could say that and not feel a single thing in order to gain more rights in the country I live in.

Yes its ridiculous, but I would say it. I would be laughing hysterically in my mind but I'd say it. :D
