Magic Jack

Hi guys. My hubby and I are contemplating a Magic Jack for my family here in the PI. We would just like to know if it makes any difference if the internet connection is on DSL but also on WLAN. We are hoping to have a Magic Jack my mom can just plug into her laptop so we can call each other.

Oh and does anybody know of a good and trustworthy place we can get one here in the Philippines? We're hoping to save on cost and effort, so instead of getting it in the US and reshipping it, we want to get one here in the PI.

I have used it with 802.11g and it works ok. Not sure it would work decent with a slower rated Wifi connection.

My fiancee lives in Butuan and her dsl connection is spotty at best. The magic jack works ok but we have many periods were sound quality is borderline and drop connections are very common.

I've been using the MJ for several months now as my primary home phone here in the US. I sent one to my fiance and what we found out is that you NEED to have BETTER THAN DECENT internet in order for it to work clearly. It also helps to switch the setting to aircard (3g), rather than normal (hi-speed).

Most of our conversations are useless because we can barely understand each other due to her internet service.

what she has for internet service is provided by some cellphone company that utilizes a small dish that's pointed at a cell tower, so it's either globe or smart.

Guys, it's just better to get your fiance/wife better internet service if you're going to use the magicjack.

So does it give free US to Phil calls if you paid the $19.95 a year ?

You have to get a phil number in the US in order to do this ?

Is that what people in the US are doing now to call phil for Free ?

With MJ do you have any phone call record evidence history to show at the interview ?

The Phil rates from US are about .24 cents a minute that's the same as my AT&T.

I don't understand right now how there's any benefit in using this from US to Phil.

You guys are using this a different way somehow ?

Magic Jack should be used and hooked up in the Philippines with a fast internet. And then Magic Jack will let that person in the Philippines choose a US area code and number that he/she can use when calling US phone numbers thereby making it cheaper to call. Its like having US phone number even if the person lives in another country.

Yes as raquel_1208 said.

When you set up MJ you get a local number in area code in US you want to call. Then it makes it so that it is a local call thus no charge.

My wife and I have been using one for a while now. You really do need the dsl service there in the Phils. She's on the fastest that Bayantel offers ( I think it's like a 750k connection or something like that). It works pretty well with no more dropped calls than the average cell phone. You have to install and register it here in the US before hand though. When you install it here in the states, it will find an available phone number as close as possible to your location. Then just send it to the Phils and it will think it's in the area code where you registered it. And yes, It will only work in the US and Canada. It was well worth the 39.95 to buy it and the 19.95 a year!

I just got a cable/internet/phone bundle through Cox here in Kansas and the international rates are pretty reasonable. .12 to a landline in the phils and .16 to a cell there.

I have magicjack too.You need to buy it here in the US and registered it with US number and then send to ur Mom so she can call you/US,Canada,Puerto Rico for free and unlimited.
