Old Maverick McCain tells it like it is! Says Obama was WRONG in suggesting no connection between Saddam and 9/11.

Around the same time as the Virginia interview aired, the Spanish-language Univision published its own sit down with McCain, in which the Arizonan suggested that there was a direct connection between the September 11 terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq.

Asked by the host whether he agreed with Barack Obama that "the Iraq war had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks of 9/11," McCain replied:

"No. We invaded a country that every intelligence agency said was developing weapons of mass destruction. Think of Saddam Hussein in power with oil at 100 dollars a barrel, and all that entails with his commitment which when after he was captured, he stated categorically that he would acquire weapons of mass destruction, and he would use them wherever he could. Now, Iraq--"

"But he had nothing to do with 9/11," the hosted interjected.

"He had a lot to do with invading his neighbor Kuwait, and we had to go to war and fight there," McCain replied. "He had a lot to do with using weapons of mass destruction, he used them previously, so there's no doubt about his commitment to get them."

Oh my gosh! What can one say to such blatant rubbish? I guess if you allow Ms Palin to be a great debater, you allow for McCain to make contradictory statements and present them as reality.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Something about all this makes me uncomfortable - it seems to me that McCain is deliberately stoking the ignorance of elements of the conservative base in order to rubbish Obama.

He won't say that Obama is a terror-loving moslem terrorist and he'll even go out of his way to talk about how much respect he has for him, but all of the nudge-nudge, wink-wink innuendo that comes out of his campaign seems to indicate that something else is going on.

The stupid thing is, if he had been allowed to campaign on his pre presidential race personality, he would probably have done ok - I honestly thought he stood a good chance based on his senatorial persona. I have no idea what why the GOP PR company decided on this particular stategy, but it's bull #######.

I also know many independants who were totally put off his candidacy when he picked Ms Palin, for all kinds or reasons, not least those who think he chose her for eye candy. Anyway, I think those who are betting on a McCain victory should be getting very, very long odds at the moment, it just doens't seem likely at this time.

I'm starting to think that - the selection of Palin was a gamble, but it failed spectacularly when she opened her mouth to the interviewers. And it unfortunately it puts a greater emphasis on the relevance of the age/health issue - if Palin ends up stepping in.

I'd hesitate to call it for Obama at the moment - but it does seem that not only has McCain prostituted off his principles to ensure the support of the conservative base, but that his campaign has run itself into the ground in some respects. Now they're resorting to these sorts of smears - and they're not even good about that.

I'd expected some resurgence of the Reverend Wright issue - but... nothing...
