Considering relocating to Vietnam

I have a dear friend who teaches English in Saigon. The main hurdle in Vietnam is not the government, but the individual schools which would hire you. If you want a decent paying job, it is best to have a bachelor's degree and the TESOL. And with the cost of food going up so fast, you'll want a decent paying job. It's awful tough to live on $100 a month, or even $250.

It's a good way to make the move to Asia, but it's certainly not for everyone. I probably speak and write English better than the average American, but I'm not at all sure I'd want to teach English for a living. Although....(pause)....if it were a matter of being with my wife versus not being with her for who knows how long....I might be persuaded to do almost anything.

Good luck.

I like Vietnam and all but no way I could live forever there. I would just fight and never give up until she is here with me. Right now we will have so much here and a great life together. There both us would be just spinning our wheels.

They are in short of native teachers in Vietnam that they would offer you a job without asking teaching degree. My fiance found a teaching job with VUS though he did not have any teaching certificate. They pay 14 - 20$/ hour.

How about moving to europe or australia or other parts of asia. i gather you are a college graduate, with work experence in a professional field. It's much easier to get similar types of western jobs in europe, japan, hong kong, australia. it's much easier for your wife to go to those countries as well. Seems like leaving everything in the US is not an issue, so why not move to one of thos places.

I am not by any means looking to move to Vietnam indefinitely, unless I like it there that much. I love the U.S. just not the bureaucracies that I have gone through in attempting to obtain a visa for my fiancee so that we can begin a family together. I am not sure I would be better off moving to another country since she would likely have to obtain a visa and I would not be a citizen of that country to sponsor her. I believe it would however be much easier in obtaining a visa from another country other than the U.S. The one and only reason that I am even considering this as an option is so that we can be together until her visa is sorted out and we can come back the U.S. and live together.

You can be together and still apply (wait for the paperwork to go through its course). It's not too difficult to establish residence in Vietnam for a year. As for another country, Taiwan is pretty easy as well, and Vietnamese citizens can go to Taiwan easily.

As for working abroad, teaching English is pretty much the main niche. Usually, if you have a college degree, you can pretty much get a teaching job in Asia.

Yeah, I'm looking down this path myself. I've taught ESL for many years in Taiwan, so that helps. I'll know in a few weeks if this is what I will have to do...

I just LOVE our American Consulate in Vietnam. Good folks!

I really do not know much about Taiwan as far as employment and the quality of life.

I really do not blame the consulate because I understand how difficult of a job that they must have. I blame all of those who do this for any reason other than for love. It is all of those who make this process so difficult for the consulate as well as for all of us.

I'm currently taking the TEFL course online, but since you're in NYC you can take it in one week end:

http://www.bridgetefl.com/weekend.php

I have seen articles online that said that online courses are frowned upon, but I have no choice.

I'm leaving at the end of December, so ask me how it is teaching there in February or March.

My problem with the consulate is this: You do everything that is asked and you still don't get approved. They have no clue if their process is working or not; they simply make it more difficult so that they feel better about themselves. It's like witch hunting back in the day. Democratic government processes do not operate that way.
