We live in my hubby's parent place.... How sexy is this ?

And for now we are basically living from paycheck to paycheck.... What kills us is old debts (student loan, 1st divorce (no kids) (=401k loan), + another 12k surprise from his ex wife, car loan).

We are making it but really short.... Can't wait to start working and kick the ### of all thoses debts !

(I'm against debts... i HATE debts.... Personally i have no debts (except a soon to come loan for school))

I am most interested in being where the action is so to speak...

mostly where the artist communities are, in the city, but not where the skyscrapers are...know what I mean?

I am not a suburb kinda person.

Bleh...they are the antithesis of culture!

I like being in a creative community, and (or) in such rural places where I am either having to chop wood for my wood-stove (no one around for miles...mmm quiet), or living on a boat, preferable in a part of the ocean where you can do that year round. :D

Any recommendations of where to explore for urban, creative, community type living?

We could get a condo, hmmm...it does not need to be a house...preferably rent to start and see how we like it (for 6 months or so).

We are thinking of doing this move in June or so (that is when my partner is looking at leaving his current job), maybe I will move sooner.

Winter is coming...

:P

Here's a few notes about my opinion of the area, too. Note that most of this is reaffirming what SRVT said.

Santa Cruz & Half Moon Bay are both by the coast and very nice communities. Right next to Santa Cruz is Capitola, which is also a nice place to live.

Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, and Big Sur are also all small cities in the area. Carmel and Big Sur are known for having a lot of local artists. I haven't been to Carmel for a number of years, but a lot of their downtown used to be packed with galleries featuring local artwork you can buy. I'm pretty sure homes in this area are relatively expensive, too.

The weather in this area is pretty temperate, but it does get fairly cold in the wintertime. You could probably live on a boat, but you'd need some good blankets during winter. Also, the water is pretty cold.

If you go about 200 miles south, there's also quite a few small cities along the coast of California. There's Cambria, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach. All are coastal, small cities. San Luis Obispo is also in that area and is about 15 minutes from the beach. It's a small, college town. Very beautiful, very quiet. (It's affectionately called "SLO" because of the 'slow life' there.)

Further south is Santa Barbara, but home prices there are outrageous.

I didn't know if you were planning on working a regular 9-to-5 job while here or exploring the area, but most of the cities I've mentioned are a little far away from big cities. Most of the towns I mentioned rely on tourism. Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Half Moon Bay are within commute distance to the Silicon Valley, though.

Thank you kindly LuckyDucky!

These places as well as the coast of Oregon and Seattle will all get serious consideration.

All advice of personal knowledge is greatly appreciated.

And you can be sure we (from whichever town I visit) will be going out for a drinky poo when I show up to investigate/explore!

Tough times.

It looks like you are handling it all pretty well and with some sense of humour.
